Toshiba at MWC 2009

I suppose by now everyone has heard about Toshiba’s almighty G1, powered by a 1 Ghz CPU and SnapDragon, that boasts a proprietary software shell and basically materializes the dreams of all Windows Mobile aficionados. All in all, it’s another phone that the market has high expectation for. Will it deliver, though? No idea. But at least they allowed us to play around with the G1 for a while – its software was nothing to write home about, and the plasticky casing just kept overheating every five minutes. However, the thing that amazed me the most was just how slow all these samples were. This coupled with “overheated again, need to reboot, not optimized yet” remarks from Toshiba’s officials didn’t make me particularly ecstatic about this phone.

You think that’s all they had to show at MWC? Actually, no, they had some more prototypes – truly, how Toshiba can possibly be worse than Sony Ericsson? So they showcased some of their concepts, like a phone that could work underwater, and even devices with two keypads or displays. Although I doubt any of these prototypes will ever see daylight.
