3GSM congress. Pantech - do not shoot, sell or thinkPantech continues to surprise us with giving nonsensical directions to its employees: to be precise, this time booth promoters didn't let anyone make pictures of the phones, while they were in one's hands – only on the stand and only full face photos (no sideviews allowed, according to them). And all this, attention, was taking place against the background of a completely empty booth. The only given explanation of these limitations impressed us with its logical base – “we are afraid of our competitors stealing the devices' design – it's too unique”. Dreams are dreams and no ados here. Though there are no proven cases of copying Pantech's handsets appearances, but as to gaining over engineers from the other companies and numerous legal proceedings on this matter – these cases are widely known. Despite all restrictions, we managed to make some pictures of all newly introduced solutions, and to tell the truth there were a few of them. Moreover Russian consumers are already familiar with some of them – these reviews you can find on our page.
PG1800 has a middle-end clamshell's appearance, with integrated slot for microSD, VGA-camera and Bluetooth. This model is capable of hitting the highest popularity ranks out of all Pantech's products released by this moment, though its screen has only a 128 õ 160 pixels resolution.
PG8000 features an innovative and very original solution – as a matter of fact the device is meant to be hold in one's right hand. The handset's design makes a favorable impression on the whole, but at the same time it has some flaws in its ergonomics. Among non-standard features for Pantech one can note pronouncing text information, in particular reading SMS messages aloud with a metallic voice. The built-in camera features 2 mpx resolution. No point in describing the devices since we will post a definitive review in the next few days.
PG3600V is made in the form-factor of a slider and possesses Touch Wheel, which is very close in many ways to the same feature in iPOD. The microSD extension slot is located between the two parts of the device, on its upper part. The phone has a TFT 262 K screen with the resolution of 176x220 and the 1.3 mpx integrated camera. Besides these, the model doesn't have any considerable advantages over the other competitors.
GI100 got a sucessor in the form of PG-6200, featuring the same finger-print scanner – a useless thing on handsets which hasn't proven to be of some interest, this is indicated by the average sales of GI100 and negative feedback from the users after 2-3 months of usage. However it seems Pantech has employed really dedicated people, who think they can impose their solutions on the market and make everyone use only their handsets – really, how could one buy Nokia, Motorola and so on? But in order to render justice, the scanner is located not on the place of navigating key, but at the very bottom, thus it may be of some use in the end. Judging by the Samsung's experience, the manufacturer integrated Motion sensor into the device. A very good undertaking, I assume they should pay attention to Braun, Philips latest reaches and build in an electric shaver there, especially for men. Though the only issue that steps into the forefront is that Pantech's variant will morel likely shave you to death, since the quality of functions and the way they are done is pretty average. Like model 8000 this device features pronunciation of text, a 2 mpx camera and a slot for microSD.
For the 3G networks the company developed GU- 1100, a candybar shaped device, featuring two VGA-cameras, microSD cards extension slot and an mp3-player. All this indicates that this model is nothing more but a low-end handset.
Another UMTS-targeted model is PU-5000 slider. The characteristics are common for Pantech, since it's one and the same platform – the only feature is the possibility of updating firware via air (FOTA); 1.3 mpx camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth and a player are still on board.
Short sum-up regarding Pantech is rather simple – with this attitude towards press, consumers and other manufacturers, one can't expect much from the company, since it reminds of a small gambler, full of complexes and that can't rise even in his estimation.
