CeBIT 2003 first day of the exhibition without usual visitors (11 March 2003). Part 2

Part 1

When most people had a lunch, we attended different press conferences. First one was a Vodafones presentation. Unfortunately, all reports were in German, but nevertheless, I will try to tell about the most interesting moments.

The company launches a unique service. Any subscriber can dial a special phone number and sing a melody, the system will find an original melody among 1.6 million of records (for today) , plays it back and give you a name of the singer and album title. Certainly, its an operator dependable service and the model of the phone doesnt influence it. Now you wont suffer if you remember a tune but forget a singer.

The other nice service is Vodafone-StreetGuide. It enables to receive maps to orient. Unfortunately, no word was said about the realization of this idea.

Next press conference was Nokias one, where the company unveiled new products and technologies. Even before the conference, there were many discussions about the number of new models. Most were right, the company announced only two new phones, which are, by the way, only revised versions of old models. I dont want to say about them now because tomorrow I will be able to try them and share my opinion. Its necessary to add that probably the company will introduce new models in the end of spring. Evidently, CeBIT is not a reason now to introduce new products. We noticed that there were many disappointments after this presentation. On the one hand, journalists have less to do, on the other everybody expect more from the leader.

After that I tried to attend a similar meeting organized by Logitech, but I wasnt in time. So I took press kit and decide to see more novelties.

So, the next booth, which I attended, was Panasonics booth. I tried to find their several new models, but I succeed to find only one phone (only dummy in fact). It was promised that in the evening a real prototype of X70 will be available, but I didnt wait for it. This handset resembles a popular Panasonic GD87 by shape, full specification are not known yet, but according to the information, which was written on the poster, its almost a copy of GD87. The main changes are improved camera and a new external display orientation, may be there is something else but its better to wait for a real prototype.

Several colors are available for GD87.

Near Panasonic, on the booth of Motorola we could see a group of people who had a rehearsal before tomorrows appearance. Now advertising campaign of Motorola is aimed to young people, mostly Americans.

During the exhibition companies representatives can sometimes resemble electrician, as they have too much equipment.

In contrast to previous exhibitions, the company conducts a really large advertising campaign.

The last place, which I could visit, was Samsungs booth. Later well tell about it more elaborately, but now you can view several photos and read short comments.

A culmination is a new smartphone, based on Symbian, which is called D700. The screen is rotated in all directions; you could even put it over a keypad. Unfortunately, there were no working samples; probably they will be available in two days.

And here are new entry-level phones from Samsung, which would be sold already in the beginning of September. They have a color screen, polyphonic ringer and classical design. What do you need else?

Next model will substitute V200, it has an external OLED display. This kind of displays becomes very popular now; they are used in many products.

Here is a phone of new generation, pay attention to design and OLED external display.

The last handset is differed from other phones by a built-in FM-radio. It is also positioned as a gaming console, what is proved by keys shape. Standard delivery kit contains a set of traditional games, which do not demand such kind of joystick. A menu animation was a little bit changed, it looks fresher.

That is all for today. In the next part I will tell about such companies as Motorola, Alcatel, Sagem and some others. I hope that these articles will be helpful.
