Video: Promo Video For 16 MP HTC Smartphone?    [ 18-04-2011 17:32 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket Now     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Rumours abound that HTC is prepping the release of a 16 MP camera equipped Windows Phone 7 smartphone. The rumour comes about as Pocket Now found a promo video for the alleged handset, which looks to be essentially a Desire S sans the Windows Phone capacitive buttons. On this point Pocket Now are suggesting that this may just be a placeholder with the actual handset looking different. Anyway, whether this proves true or not, check out the video:

Android & iOS Grab More Gaming Revenue    [ 18-04-2011 16:46 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Flurry     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Android and iOS are increasingly gobbling up marketshare from the traditional portable gaming options according to new figures from Flurry and NPD. Back in 2009 iOS held a 19% share of portable gaming revenues, but a year later that figure had jumped to 34% whilst Android also entered the frey with a 9% share. That's bad news for Nintendo, which saw its DS's share of revenue drop from a very commanding 70% share in 2009 to 57% last year. Now to be fair the figures shown here are only for the current portable options and don't factor in newer options like the NGP and 3DS. Even so it does suggest an upward trend for smartphone gaming.

To put this into greater context though let's look at the overall games market in the U.S. Here we see a different story with the overall portable gaming revenue share (both smartphones and dedicated portable options) actually decreasing from 2009 to 2010; from 29% to 24%. That comes about as consoles increased their share of revenue from 71% in 2009 to 76% in 2010. So even if the likes of Android and iOS are grabbing more revenue from the portable market the overall games amrket is still very much dominated by consoles and if anything portable is losing out.

More HTC Leakage: HTC Mazaa    [ 18-04-2011 15:51 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: XDA Devs     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's a day for HTC rumours it seems with pictures of another purported handset appearing over at XDA Devs, this time the HTC Mazaa (yes it is a daft codename and you are right to mock it).  Sadly specs are for this handset are not in abundance, but current thinking is that the screen is 3.7 inches and will no doubt be a capacitive effort. There are three capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen, the usual Windows Phone malarky e.g. back, home and search.

Turning to the back of the device there's a LED flash, a camera and an external speaker. Not much to go on, but the camera is supplemented by a front facing camera so expect video calling support. The chap leaking the images did mention the possibility that the handset would come with DDR2 (double rate synchronous dynamic RAM). If true then performance should be nippy to say the least.

Samsung: Dual-Core 2 GHz Smartphone By 2012    [ 18-04-2011 12:13 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Maeli Business Newspaper     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Maeli Business Newspaper are reporting that Samsung is planning on some very serious hardware for smartphones next year. Citing what they claim to be a 'high-ranking' official from Samsung (unnamed of course) the newspaper says that Samsung is looking to roll out a smartphone running a dual-core chip with a speed of 2 GHz. Now just to be clear that 2 GHz is not the clock speed of a single core, each of those two cores will be running at 2 GHz!

ARM have a dual-core design capable of this sort of performance at the moment in fact so it could very well be the case that Samsung bases its plans on that design. Samsung are also said to be considering selling the chips as a seperate product. In other words they wouldn't just be available in Samsung smartphones, they could pop up in other manufacturer's handsets and perhaps set a new standard for smartphone performance in the process (delicious pun!).

Google Translate For Android - Upgrade Brings More Languages    [ 18-04-2011 00:03 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the best thing about using Android are the apps Google itself produces. They're usually good, in fact they're usually amongst the best apps available for Android, or any platform for that matter. Case in point, Google Translate. Yes yes yes I know it's not 100% perfect in translating, but it translates better than you do or you wouldn't be using it in the first place!

Anyhoo Google Translate has just received an update and now has support for spoken Japanese, Arabic and Korean. It has also had its spoken translations upgraded to sound more natural i.e. more human. In total it now supports 58 languages and of those 24 can be spoken. Not too shabby at all! You can check out the new spoken languages in the video below, which, by the way, has quite possibly the best soundtrack I've heard on an app promo video (that is if you like swing music, which I do!).
