Microsoft Wants $15 Per Android Handset From Samsung    [ 05-07-2011 20:38 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft are on the hunt for cash ... from Samsung. Micrsooft wants the South Korean manufacturer to pony up $15 for every Android device it produces. Wait Android is a Google thing right? Well Microsoft has a number of patents that it says are being used in connection with Android handsets. Last year Microsoft got a deal from HTC over pretty much the same issue and HTC agreed to pay Microsoft an undisclosed fee per Android handset produced. That fee was thought to be $15 so the demand for Samsung to cough that figure up shouldn't be a surprise.

Samsung are expected to respond to Microsoft with a counter offer according to the South Korean Maeil Business Newspaper. That counter offer is said to be in the range of $10 per handset. Whether Microsoft accepts that or not it seems that Samsung are prepared to work out some sort of deal rather than fight tooth and nail to not pay anything at all.

Games Dominate App Downloads    [ 05-07-2011 20:27 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nielsen via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some more figures from Nielsen and this time its apps! A breakdown of popular app downloads for Q2 of this year once again crowns games as the most popular category of app for smartphone users. Some 64% of smartphone users surveyed had downloaded at least one game within the previous 30 days. Mind you games don't have a convincing lead over the number two category 'weather apps', which saw 60% of respondents say they had downloaded such an app in the previous month.

Interestingly though for games a remarkable number (93%) said that they would be willing to part with their cash to download a game they wanted to play. iPhone owners in particular seem to be the biggest gamers, clocking up an average of 14.7 hours of gaming on their device each month. That's almost double the figure for the average mobile gamer. The iPhone was joined by Android and Windows Phone as the platforms with users most likely to have downloaded games. Poor old BlackBerry came up as having gamers who were more liekly to be playing games already installed on their handset when they bought it.

Smartphones Outselling Dumbphones    [ 05-07-2011 20:20 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Nielsen     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some new figures for the Americans martphone market from Nielsen paint an interesting (and worrying in RIM's case) picture. The 'headline' item here is that smartphone are outselling dumbphones in America; 55% of sales are now for smartphones, compared with 34% just a year ago. Now before we get too excited it is worth pointing out that dumbphones do still outnumber smartphones, but that is changing. Smartphone penetration has risen from 29.7% to 38% and it's important to stress that that's within the last few months.

I mentioned before that RIM has cause to worry and when we turn to the platform statistics we see why. RIM's market share has fallen from 27.4% to 21%. As if that wasn't bad enough RIM's phones only account for 6% of new smartphone activations. If the champagne corks aren't flying at RIM then they are at least sipping sancerre at Google where Android's growth continues although here we something something curious. The long held opinion was that Android was ballooning forth, but what we see with these statistics is that whilst Android maintains a 38% share of the market to make it the leading platform in America, it's growth is steady, not exponential.

iOS on the other hand has seen some impressive growth recently with a 27% share of the market and importantly accounting for 17% of new activations. Windows Phone isn't really registering yet, accounting for just 1% of new activations, but with more handsets on the way and Nokia throwing its bulk behind the platform that could change.
