Microsoft Launching Web Based Win Phone Marketplace    [ 26-05-2011 17:59 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Windows Phone Developer Blog     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft are planning on setting up a web based version of their Windows Phone Marketplace. It will do pretty much what you expect it to i.e. allow you to browse and buy apps using a web browser rather than from your handset. Any apps you choose will be installed on your handset using OTA, but Microsoft are saying that where that is not available/supported you will be able to have the app delivered using SMS or even through an email that you send to yourself.

The web based store will also utilise social media so you can share apps with your chums so expect much tweeting and Facebook usage there. There will also be a saved download history for users so that if you decide to change your handset you can easily re-install anything you have before.

The store is expected to launch alongside the Mango update.

Video: Xperia Facebook Inside Preview    [ 26-05-2011 17:51 ]

The Sony Ericsson Product Blog have posted up a video of the new Facebook Inside service for Xperia handsets. The video is basically just an overview of the system rather than a review or an in-depth analysis, but it is still worth a look if you just want to see how it works.

One particularly nice feature to look out for are the Lock-screen status displays, which mean you can see Facebook updates without unlocking your phone let alone starting up the Facebook app.

Video: Stephen Elop Says Symbian Will Receive Support Until 2016    [ 26-05-2011 16:14 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Stephen Elop, Nokia's head honcho, has gone on the record as saying that Symbian will continue to receive updates until 'at least 2016'. That's obviously still some time away so Symbian users shouldn't panic just yet about Nokia winding down its Symbian operations, but of course what level that continued support will take is another question.

The remarks were made during an interview with the Chinese equivalent of Nokia Conversations and you can see the interview inthe video below. It is worth saying a little more about this continued Symbian support though. One of Nokia's biggest successes, and the thing that propelled them to the number one spot worldwide, was their ability to reach customers in all parts of the world with relatively inexpensive handsets. That included cheap smartphones running Symbian.

The question before us then is how serious will support for Symbian remain once Nokia can mass produce cheap Windows Phone handsets? Windows Phone is their new platform of choice and if they can start selling cheap units in developing countries as they did with Symbian you have to wonder how serious that continued commitment to Symbian will really be.

BBC (Finally) Launches Android News App    [ 26-05-2011 16:11 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The BBC have finally launched an Android news app! The corporation already has a similar app for the iPhone of course so the debut of an Android is long overdue and will no doubt come as a relief to those who have been searching for a suitable BBC News app in place of anything official.

The application gives the user access to the BBC's top news tories and includes pictures, videos and sharing options using email and Facebook. There's some other sweetness in there too such as pre-cache viewing, background syncing and a nice little widget for news viewing from the homescreen. One particularly nice touch is support for streaming video content.

The app is available for Android devices running Froyo (Android 2.2) and upwards. Oh and of course being the BBC it's free.
