Sony Facing Worst Ever Loss    [ 10-04-2012 19:40 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Sony     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

If Nokia's finances aren't looking too rosy then Sony certainly has nothing to crow about either. They are now projecting a massive annual loss for the financial year ending on 31st March. Factoring in a tax hit Sony is now looking at an annual loss of $6.4 billion, which is roughly twice what Sony had originally thought and marks the fourth year in a row that Sony will have been operating at a loss. That figure also represents Sony's worst ever result it should be noted. The main reason for these losses, according to Masaru Kato, Sony's CFO, is basically poor demand for its products. Along with these losses rumours have been circulating that Sony could be looking to shed up to 10,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs. A new game plan for Sony is set to be unveiled this Thursday, a plan CEO Kaz Hirai hopes will see the Japanese giant turn things around.

Instagram Notches Up 5 Million Downloads On Android    [ 10-04-2012 18:51 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Tthe Net Web     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Beloved of many an iPhone user Instagram has had a pretty decent time of it recently by anyone's measure. Not only is the company being bought out by Facebook for a cool $1 billion it's newly released Android version is storming up the app download charts. In less than a day the Android version had managed to clock up a very impressive 1 million downloads and with less than a week of availability it has now passed the five million mark. Those figures, impressive as they are, probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise given its popularity with iPhone users and the fact that Android users were denied access to it for so long. No doubt the interest will peak soon(ish), but for the time being Android users are going Instagram crazy!

Amazon To Offer In-App Purchases    [ 10-04-2012 16:43 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Amazon     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Amazon are looking to offer devs more opportunities to generate revenue, as well as to more directly compete with Apple and Google, by offering a new service that allows devs to sell additional content from within apps. Devs can start hawking stuff like level packs, updated features, etc from within their own apps using Amazon's 1-Click system. If any of that is too complicated to follow Amazon have kindly created a video explaining it.

Nokia Facing Troubled Q2 With Poor Symbian & Mixed Lumia Sales    [ 10-04-2012 15:04 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's hasn't exactly been storming ahead this year, having posted a hefty loss of 954 million euros in the first quarter. The second quarter is almost set to be another blow for Nokia according to Mike Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity. Walkley explained "We are lowering our estimates ahead of Nokia's Q1/2 earnings report as our checks indicate weak Symbian ales, seasonally soft feature phone sales, and a slow ramp in Windows smartphones".

According to Canaccord's figures Lumia sales have been mixed on a global level, but lowering prices in Europe are helping to boost things at least. Symbian is basically dead in the water according to Canaccord, which won't be helping the bottom line much. The real one to watch though is Windows Phone. Nokia has essentially 'bet the company' on Microsoft's platform and Walkley believes that 2012 will be the make or break year for Windows Phone. Networks around the world are looking to support the platform more to be fair so it could start to see more traction, but even so the going is still likely to be slow. Walkley expanded "Given the investment necessary to grow the ecosystem, we view 2012 as a transitional year and anticipate a modest pro forma loss for Nokia". In other words if Windows Phone doesn't see some real improvement this year chances are it probably won't at all.
