February 2003: New products. Part 2

First part>>>

Motorola. Motorola officially introduced Motorola C350 on Russian market. Russia is the first country, where this model has already gone on sale. In Europe Motorola Ñ350 would be available only in March. The price of the new phone is not high. For example, today retail price of Motorola C350 is about 170 USD. It is the lowest price for the phone equipped with color screen (STN, 4096 colors). We were able to test this phone, the review could be found here. This model is almost a copy of Motorola C336. The only changes are new screen, louder ringer and some others.

It’s more interesting that the company is going to introduce several new Linux-powered smartphones. Motorola opposed its own elaboration to Symbian-powered devices, which also would be included in the line. It means that A-series will include both phones, operated under Linux and OS Motorola as well. The company will launch a first Linux-powered phone in the third quarter 2003. This model will be aimed to Asiatic market. Motorola A760 is an elaborate color-screen phone with a digital camera, MP3 audio player, video player and the ability to run Java programs. Later it would be released in North America and Europe. Eventually, the company plans to move Linux to lower-end phones.

It became a tradition for Motorola to make limited editions of series models, which have an unusual design, on the occasion of memorable dates. For example, on the occasion of Saint Valentine’s Day, Motorola together with Baby Phat, a leading woman’s fashion label, launched of the Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons Limited Edition Motorola i95cl phone, aimed to all ladies. This handset is decorated by pearls. Besides, there is pre-installed slide-show of Baby Phat’s Spring 2003 fashion line in the phone memory. This model costs about 550 USD.

The second event, which is Nokia concerned, is connected with N-Gage gaming device. The company tries to make a forecast and estimate long-term outlook for it. Finally, the company revealed more details concerning this device, again introduced it to journalist and interested about their opinion about the future of this gaming console. Probably, the company sounds out the possibilities not only of this model, but other similar ones as well.

Samsung. More rumors are spread about the sequel to famous “The Matrix”. For example, it is said that Samsung was developing a phone, based on the Matrix idea. Here is a site (Flash) and several pictures below.

Besides, Samsung began sales of its new phone SPH-V3000 capable of recording up to 30 minutes of moving images at once and store them with a 110,000 pixel-class CMOS digital camera installed in the phone. This model is provided for KTFs third-generation multimedia service "Fimm". With this handset users are allowed to watch television programs of local TV and cable TV stations. SPH-V3000 costs around 500 USD.

Sony Ericsson. At 3GSM Congress in Cannes, the company said that it would launch its first third-generation phone (UMTS/GSM). This model is called Sony Ericsson Z1010. The main peculiarity of this handset is a pair of built-in video cameras, so that its users can transmit live video while calling someone with another 3G phone (either picture of your face or surrounding landscape, a user can select a necessary camera himself). Other functions, which this nice phone (similar to a new Sendo by design features) has, are not known yet.

Smartphones. We said about several new smartphones last month, now we are going to tell about some new models. For example, device which is called Filewalker (Invair Technologies) can be seen on CeBIT. It is one more Linux-powered smartphone, which has a standard set of features. It differs from other similar devices by simpler control. According to developers it would be possible to control this device with one hand. Whether it’s true or not, we’ll be able to know on the exhibition.

At 3GSM World Congress 2003, Microsoft Corp. and Intel announced the immediate availability of the first Microsoft and Intel Windows® Powered Smartphone concept design based on the Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA). Wistron Corp., a leading supplier of information and communication technology products, is the first to take advantage of this concept design and launches a device even this year.

The Microsoft and Intel concept design combines Microsoft's powerful Windows Powered Smartphone software with the innovative stacked memory and microprocessor design of the Intel PXA262 processor to enable a 176x220-pixel color screen, an integrated camera and up to five hours of talk time. Phones based on this design can be used to easily surf the Web, play media files and seamlessly integrate with Outlook® and other PC applications.

The last device is also regarded to be a gaming console, not a smartphone. TTPCom has launched a new mobile game player, code-named B’ngo. The product is a console-style games player as well as a fully-featured mobile phone. Probably, it would be the rival to Nokia’s N-Gage and device from Sony Ericsson. TTPCom’s Wireless Graphics Engine (WGE) software offers a particularly exciting game playing experience because it enables the use of simultaneous key presses in which the user can move and shoot at the same time - a facility not generally available today on other mobile gaming phones. Advantages of this game phone are a possibility to play with 8 people simultaneously via Bluetooth, Java applications support, integrated digital camera, GPRS (class 10) and at last more than 100 various games compatibility. The manufacturer decide to reach a success by low retail price, it is expected that it would be about 200 USD.
