Alcatel at CeBIT 2005

After establishing a new joint company with TCL Alcatel or in particular its product line turned to be on a crossroad. On the one hand models already announced and shown to the general public and a new strategy and future products on the other hand. A period of transition is hard for any company, but Alcatel seems to stand it firmly looking in the future. Three classes of devices with corresponding indexes appeared in the new product line.

  • OT-E or low-end devices with minimum functions (Value-for-money entry offer. Easy-to-use features. Stylish design)
  • OT-C or middle-class models (Mid tier offer. Cool features. Fresh technology. Unique design)
  • OT-S or top models in the company's sense, often that is a middle class for others but manufactured worse and having a worse body quality (High-end offer. Smart and unique features. Cutting edge design. Innovative technology)

Two phone families could have been seen at the stand at the same time - old devices without indexes in letters and devices of the new line.

The OT S853 was of the greatest interest among all the new models introduced earlier. And following the name it is a premium segment device. To tell the truth, the device will cost about 300 USD in summer and that is acceptable for a middle class device. Interchangeable memory cards are used, 1.3 MP camera, an mp3 player and a qualitative screen are integrated. You can acquaint with the specifications in a corresponding review. The company put the maximum emphasis on promoting the model, and, indeed, it is hard to miss at the stand.

Differently to the rivals, for instance, Siemens CX75, the model is manufactured more expensive, the plastic is glossy and shows fingerprints clearly (many people taught the phone at the exhibition). The back of the body is the most easily spoiled. Side buttons are easy to work with and provide fast access to all the player functions. In the camera mode they are responsible for shooting. At first sight the screen seemed comparable to Siemens CX75 or even better. Side loudspeakers shake at the maximum volume but evaluating the reproduction quality is impossible due to the exhibition noise, calm conditions are necessary.

The keypad is really comfortable; the joystick shifted to the left will be up to right-handed people that are in the majority. A card slot shutter is rubber and easy to unbend.

A short summary tells the device is very interesting and deserves great attention.

The One Touch 155 was shown of the old low-end models, the review may be found on our site. The elder version with the 156 index and a colour screen was also represented. The 355 is of a certain interest and will be reviewed in the nearest future.

As for the new line, we had an opportunity to hold Alcatel OT-C551 in our hands. That is a cut version of the 555 model. The device works in GSM/GPRS (900/1800 MHz) networks, is equipped with a 65K CSTN display with the resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. There is a VGA camera, Push-To-Talk support, loudspeakers with 3D sound, but no possibility to set an mp3 melody as a call signal unlike the elder model. 3 MB of memory are kept for your data. Also there is a support for JAVA MIDP 2.0 and WAP 2.0. The dimensions of Alcatel OT-C551 form 101 x 48 x 18,5 and the weight is 80grams.

A new clamshell the C656 equipped with two displays is placed nearby. Its external screen is up to 4K with the resolution of 128x128 pixels and the internal one is 65K having the resolution of 128x160 pixels. Both are CSTN. Also there is a VGA-camera, stereo loudspeakers, JAVA MIDP 2.0, WAP 2.0, 6 MB of memory, Push-To-Talk support. MP3 melody may be set as a call signal. The dimensions form 89,2 x 48 x 24 mm while the weight is 83 grams. The battery is 650 mAh Li-On that is enough for about 250 hours of standby work.

The A341i is intended for the networks providing the I-mode service and functionally the device resembles the C651. The phone is for working in GSM/GPRS networks and is equipped with two displays. The external screen is monochrome; the internal one is 65K CSTN with the resolution of 128x160 pixels. About 4.5 MB of memory are at a user's disposal as well as JAVA MIDP 2.0 support. The dimensions form 90 x 48 x 23,5 grams while the weight is 92 grams.
