3GSM Congress, Cannes 2004. Products from LG

Contents, all articles from 3GSM Congress

LG did not present a lot of various GSM-models, there were quite a large number of them, but if you look closer you will see that these are one and the same phones with different design. In most cases the company did not even try to increase the unbelievably low memory amount of 350kb, which is not enough for phones that are equipped with Java and built-in camera. Oh well, let’s review everything in order.

LG G7110 is very same G7100, but with slightly different design (keyboard was changed a little). There are no obvious differences from the original, except for the presence of built-in slot for digital camera.

LG G7200 was different with a number of improvements from basic G7100. First of all, it is a good screen with 176x220 pixel resolution, that is capable of displaying up to 262000 colors. In reality and not on paper specifications, the screen can be compared with usual TFT-displays that can show up to 65k colors. The picture is pleasant, but that’s all. Direct compare with Samsung D410 showed superiority of Samsung, we were not allowed to take picture at LG’s booth that would show the difference. G7200 features ability of recording video clips (mpeg4) and has AMR-codec. Alike the G5500/G7050 models, new interface is used. The company decided to drop horizontal icons and turned to the common used icon rows. Once again we encountered the low amount of available memory, the very same 350kb. What for the new features are, especially ability to record video clips with length up to 3 minutes is not yet clear. There is not enough memory for other applications in case you use the camera.

Company’s representatives in Cannes announced the new hi-tech line-up from LG. The new models will begin with index L, the first one in the list is L1100. We can’t really understand why developers decided that such models are hi-tech, what we see here is a typical solution for average segment – built-in VGA-camera, Java (MIDP 2.0), 40-tone polyphonic ring tones, display that can show up to 65000 colors (TFT, 128x160), tri-band. Unusual, even unaccustomed design for LG, these are all peculiarities of this model.

Considering the specifications, L1200 differs from L1100 only with design, memory amount is once again very little.

Another new series with index C was presented with model Ñ1400. The fact that this model was developed especially for Russia is confirmed by Russian menu, wallpapers etc. I wonder how French reacted to such menu?! The specifications are rather typical – 65K STN, 32-tone polyphonic ring tones, Java, WAP 1.2.1. This is previous generation phone with new design, thanks to which it was moved to new price category.

LG G4050 has standard specifications, but points out from the line-up with its original design.

In order to show European users company’s real possibilities LG showed a line-up of WCDMA-phones. One of them is RD7230. Below you can see its specifications – 256mb of memory (32mb RAM), VGA-camera, up to 9 shots per series, up to 1000 pictures assigned to entries in the phone book, video recording. Well, and the external screen is TFT, 262k of course. You know what they say, if memory lacks somewhere, then there’s definitely a lot of it somewhere else.

VX6000 is targeted for American market (CDMA 1xRTT), so we will not describe it.

On the whole future products from LG targeted for European market did not made an auspicious impression. At first it seems that the products have all required features, but one of them lacks memory, and the other doesn’t have something else.
