3GSM Congress, Cannes 2004. Products from Motorola

Contents, all articles from 3GSM Congress

Motorola decided to concentrate on smartphones at 3GSM Congress. Its smartphones are operated by Windows Mobile, but that’s not all, Motorola also presented 3G phones. An interesting fact, during Day 1, when the models were not officially launched the posters which were displaying the new products were covered by paper sheets in order not to show models beforehand. However a big poster in which MPx100’s photo was placed was located at the seashore, but there was no special agiotage around it though.

The fact that the company did not cover a whole series of the products which were introduced on the exhibition in its press-releases seems even more interesting. On one hand they were presented to the public, on the other no one was talking about them. A really queer situation was formed - a lot of people did not draw their attention to the new models, since they were not officially presented, they believed that the models are not rather interesting. Let’s review the devices that were shown during the exhibition, shall we?

Model Ñ115 will be shipped to most markets starting from second part of summer; this is an ODM development by company Quanta. Project’s internal name is C030, the number in the title was pointing out the cost of materials used in this phone. Basically we get a budget model that can become one of the cheapest ones on the market and it will be competitive, other manufacturers will have to deal with that, this will be a hard battle for them. Right from the beginning a modification of this phone with color screen was planned to be released, it will ship to the market after a while from C115’s launch. The retail price will be around 55-60 dollars during the first time, which is a really nice price to say the least. Being a model from economical class, this phone features the biggest battery’s capacity among all phones from Motorola (900mAh, Li-Ion). The phone can work for about a week from 1 charge. This phone is mainly targeted on the youth, scholars. The screen’s resolution is 98x64 pixels, backlight’s color is green. There is no support of MMS or Java, only voice dialing and SMS.

Ñ380 is a copy of Motorola v180, but presented in the usual form-factor. The phone will be released in the end of spring with an attractive price of 120 dollars. For this amount of money the user will get Java, MMS, 32-tone polyphonic ring tones, 128x128 pixel display (65k, STN), mp3 playback. Well, it’s clear that the screen is far from being recalled as perfect, but for such kind of product and its price this is typical and we could hardly expect anything else. The memory amount is 1.5mb. The case is made of semi-transparent plastic, which creates a curios effect of New Year’s tree with its backlight turned on.

The model C650 was more interesting; according to the company’s representatives this model will repeat the success of Ñ350. This phone has the same specifications as Motorola C380 + it has VGA-camera. This is an analogue of Motorola v220, but presented in another form-factor. The phone will hit the shelves on May, and its approximate price will be around 150 dollars. Russia will most likely become the first market where the users will be able to buy Motorola C650.

We will not describe much about the 3G phones; you can read more about Å1000, À1000, V1000’s specifications in the description section of our web-site. There were no real samples presented on company’s booth, that’s why we will provide you only with the photo of E1000.

Smartphone ÌÐõ100 was created in order to make the company’s positions in this segment more solid. The phone has 1.3mpx camera with flash, its OS is Windows Mobile 2003. Other functions are similar to MPx200, but in another form-factor. The phone turned out rather small for such kind of device; you can freely carry it in your jacket’s pocket. The keyboard located in the presented sample seemed rather inconvenient for me; key’s move was rather small. Let’s wait until the first commercial samples will appear.

ÌÐõ became a truly unexpected model for everyone, earlier on people believed it was MPx300, but from now on this model is called simply MPx. The phone can be opened horizontally and vertically, it has sensor screen with 320x240 pixel resolution. The QWERTY keyboard with WiFi look rather stunning in the list of features. The overall list turned out very interesting and competitive with top solution from Nokia – Nokia 9500. Another question is that MPx’s price will be around 550-600 dollars, which is lower than 9500’s, the only disappointing factor is that this model will be released on the middle of autumn, according to the most optimistic predictions.
