3GSM Congress, Cannes 2004. Products from Nec

Contents, all articles from 3GSM Congress

The main reason for European user’s interest is company’s products for third generation networks. Certain interest is shown for models that support of i-mode, since there are not many of them. Let’s review the whole model line quickly, shall we? Unlike the previous year the amount of models dedicated to European market rapidly increased, this means that the company is interested in this market.

Model N400i is interesting for its 64-tone synthesizer - the melodies sound really pleasantly, and perhaps are better than the phones with similar specifications produced by Korean manufacturers. The camera allows recording video clips (mpeg4), besides taking pictures; memory card extension slot is present as well. The external display can show up to 65000 colors (240x320 pixels), external one can display same amount of colors (101x80 pixels). I will mention that Siemens SL55’s display has same specifications as external display in N400i, just for compare. The compare itself is not entirely correct, since these models were released in different time, but tendency and advantages of Japanese manufacturers are obvious. LED can blink with one of 12 colors. The phone has full set of common technologies like MMS, Java, built-in e-mail client, triband frequency support. The phone’s memory is 4mb and it splits dynamically among various applications. The model is interesting and attractive and is worth your attention.

Model N341i is not so functionally rich; it is a simplified version. The external screen can display only 4096 colors (80x108 pixels), the internal one is capable of showing up to 65000, but has 162x216 pixel resolution. The polyphonic ring tones here are 40-tone, which is pretty common and can be compared with Korean manufacturer’s products. The phone’s memory is 1mb, it spreads dynamically among applications. LED has 7 backlight colors, built-in e-mail client is missing. Well, a typical average phone from NEC, which actually slightly singles it out from overall clamshell level in Europe, but it is a usual model with i-mode support for NEC, since it has “I” index in its title.

Model N331i’s technical specifications are almost the same as the ones for N341i, but it has 2mb of built-in memory, meanwhile the external screen is monochromic, but features 12 various backlight colors.

Model N223i is targeted for the youth, and its main screen can show only 4096 colors (120x160 pixels), the polyphonic ring tones are 40-tone as well, the memory amount is slightly less, than its older brothers have. On the whole this model doesn not raise any peculiar interest.

Meanwhile model e232 is one of those cheap clamshells, does not impress with original design (the case is made in shape of bean, alike Motorola C332, but this time it is clamshell). Opening mechanism is on casts, and it is the same as on real phones, not really good, its shape does not allow opening the phone with one hand without involving additional efforts. In my opinion this is not really comfortable. The specifications are traditional for its segment, internal display can display up to 65000 colors (128x160 pixels); the external one is monochromic, but with 12 different backlight colors. The phone has 2mb of built-in memory which spreads dynamically, 40-tone polyphonic ring tones. The lack of i-mode support and different design are main differences from N331i.

The story about top-model e616 was saved until the end. This is a 3G phone that combines all possible features in comparably small case. Video record, memory card slot (MS Duo), 16mb of internal memory, screen with resolution of 176x240 pixels (65000 colors, TFT). Ability to use this phone as mp3 player, this is not the full list of its possibilities. Besides rather short working time (similar to e606) this model will offer maximal amount of features, it is interesting from all positions.

Unfortunately NEC as a Japanese manufacturer did not mention the resolution for cameras in any model, only the features like digital zoom, effects and flash. Cameras are present in all models, and they are VGA ones as a rule.
