LG – emulation of mass consumer

Contents, all articles from CeBIT

LG showed the main mass of new products at 3GSM Congress in Cannes, for German exhibition only two new models were presented. But both models are rather interesting, and undeservedly lacked attention from the press.

Model L3100 is going to power up company’s positions on the average market’s segment. The design is rather unusual for LG, this is nice to see. The phone is powered with nice display that can show up to 65000 colors (STN), it has VGA camera as well. The approximate price will be around 200-220 dollars, the retail shipments will start on the middle of June; the model will become the competitor for Motorola C650. Other functions are rather common: 40-tone polyphonic ring tones, GPRS class 10, Java (MIDP 2.0), MMS. Memory amount is traditionally low - here it is about 1.5mb. The phone does have a comfortable keyboard; this comes as surprise, overall quality is high as well.

Another model is purely fashion one, most likely it was designed in order to prove that LG can release up to date phones at the same time with other manufacturers. Please give a warm welcome for T5100, model powered with 1.3mpx camera, rotating external screen and unusual design. The external screen is build on TFT-technology and can show up to 65000 colors, its resolution is 96x96 pixels. The internal screen has resolution of 176x220 pixels and can show up to 262000 colors. Both screens are very qualitative, the picture looks lively. Phone’s weight is 110 grams, which gives the unusual feeling of lightness when you see its size as well. The phone looks heavier than it actually is.

The polyphonic ring tones are 40-tone, which is typical for LG phones. The phone’s unusual side is that the camera is located on back side, it’s non-moveable. This means that you have to rotate external part with screen in order to film with comfort. This does not introduce any problems and on the whole we can admit the fact that the model turned out to be a successful one on the whole. The only thing left is using more qualitative plastic and the phone will become a true competitor for other models of this segment, at least it seems so.

The LG booth featured the first smartphone, it works under very own OS and everything is in Korean, which actually strongly reduces its attractiveness. We were not allowed to make any pictures.
