CeBIT 2003. Products from Motorola for both pedestrians and drivers-usersCeBIT 2003. All availalbe articles (about 20). Contents As usual Motorola’s stand was situated in the pavilion 26. Visitors, who attended this stand in the first day of the exhibition, couldn’t see new phones. New models, such as Motorola C230, Motorola E390 appeared later. Firstly, few words about a low-entry phone. Unfortunately, it operated only first two hours; then, all batteries were run out; then, either they were not re-charged or I came at the wrong time, but I wasn’t lucky to try it. Ñ230 is similar to Ò191 but it has a new design and such feature as KJava (it’s impossible to download own applications). Other advantages are 16-tones polyphony, alarm-clock and lightweight (80 grams). In the whole Motorola showed not bad low-end phone, which would be surely popular in its segment.
There were no working prototypes for both Å390 and V600. The main virtue of Å390 is 24-tones 3D polyphonic speaker system (the same one is applied in V600). This tri-band handset has an integrated digital camera and color STN-display (4096 colors). Functions are similar to T720i. Soon full specifications of these models will be available.
It was also possible to play on Motorola T720 simulators. The same games as in usual phone (T720) were installed there, but they were equipped with much larger screens and had usual joystick to easy control. Visitors could also stand up on the keys and play one or another melody. It was the way to show consumers musical phone capabilities. There were no otherinformation about user’s terminals. The main attention was concentrated on current models promotion actions.
Several journalists and partners could get acquainted with car kits, for Mercedes, Audi and etc. and Terrstrial Trunked Radio (TETRA), which is defined to meet needs of police, including such vehicles as autos and motorcycles. We’ll begin with Audi A8, which has the best communication solution. So, there is an integrated mobile phone, which can be controlled in several ways. Information could be shown on the screen, which displays data of the on-board computer. One could dial a number, just using the handset, or using a special vernier, positioned under the phone. In this case you could see a picture of the disk and you could select a necessary figure and press a vernier. This means that you doubtfully could dial a phone number quickly.
Control elements are also placed on the steering wheel, they double the vernier. An additional display on the dashboard makes your life more comfortable, it is almost a copy of the first main display.
The phone has certainly a voice dialing features; besides, you could dial a number, saying just figures. The hands-free system operates not always correctly even when the car doesn’t move and all doors are closed. You should correct figures to dial right phone number. Recorded voice tags have better recognition. But, nevertheless, the system, which is integrated in Audi, is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Since 2004, Mercedes will be provided by the other interesting system; it is based on Universal Handy Interface (UHI). Probably it will be available in the other automobile series too. The mobile is placed in a special cradle. A phonebook from the phone memory is transmitted to the phone via a special control unit. Now, you could call desired phone numbers just using a steering wheel. All the information is visible on the display, which is located on the dashboard. This installed system looks simpler than that in Audi, although it has almost the same functions. An additional display also presents, but interface is much simper.
Unfortunately, you couldn’t purchase a communication system without a car. But please, consult with a dealer if there is such an opportunity. That is all about this stand. CeBIT 2003. All availalbe articles (about 20). Contents Eldar Murtazin (eldar@mobile-review.com)
