Android Now Has 20,000 Apps    [ 16-12-2009 16:23 ]

Android's Marketplace looks to have reached the 20,000 app mark, easily putting it ahead of the competition as the 2nd largest app market, the iPhone holding onto the top spot with around 100,000 apps. The 20,000 figure isn't exactly official because Google doesn't release those sort of statistics, rather they come from AndroLib, which has watched the progress of the Marketplace since it first went live and thus can give a better estimation than most. Breaking down the numbers a little it's estimated that 62.3% of Android apps are free and that somewhere around 100 new apps are added each day. Interestingly 44.6% of reviews apparently give those apps 5 stars, with only 17% awarding 1 star. It would be interesting to see some further study of this issue as it would appear, from first glance anyway, that Android users are very satisfied with the apps they're using.

Although the number of Android apps is still far behind that of the iPhone the rate at which they're being added is growing. November saw some 3,500 new apps with more being produced in the first half of the month than in the whole of July. There's still a long way to go of course, but as more and more Android devices come onto the market the rate of production is only likely to go up.

The major Android story, perhaps even the major mobile story, of the moment is of course the 'Google Phone', the Nexus One. A fe wpictures have been leaking out here and there and of course the specs list is no doubt well known to most by now. Well at last we get to see this thing on video and according to thenexusone.com there are plenty more videos to come.
