X8 Eclair Update Might Not Arrive Until 2011    [ 03-11-2010 19:37 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: PC World     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With the Sony Ericsson X10 currently in the process of receiving the much anticipated update to Android 2.1 many an X8 owners might have wondered if they too would see some update love ... well yes they will ... but not right now.

PC World are reporting that the update for the X8 is coming, but as is so often the case with Sony Ericsson it is not going to be soon, rather we are looking at a couple of months with the timeframe vaguely stated as being 'by the end of the year'. Given Sony Ericsson's penchant for being unfashionably late that could very well mean that it will slip into early next year.

Either way it still doesn't answer the more fundamental question of why the X8 didn't ship with Android 2.1 (or better yet Android 2.2) in the first place? Sony Ericsson seem to live by the motto 'better late than never'.

Galaxy Tab Getting Gingerbread Update ... Probably    [ 03-11-2010 19:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung Galaxy Tab owners wondering whether or not their shiny new tablet will see an update to the forthcoming Gingerbread release of Android can heave a sigh of relief as the answer is yes, well actually it is 'probably yes', but that's good enough right?

The semi-confirmation of the update comes from a spokesman at Samsung India who made the comment to SamsungHub. The actual comments were along the lines of the Tab receiving updates to both Gingerbread (Android 2.3?) and Honeycomb (Android 3.0?). It has already been stated that Samsung will release a Gingerbread version of the Tab, but there was some uncertainty over whether this would be a separate device or whether existing users would also receive the update.

Mr Dell Is A Microsoft Kind Of Guy    [ 03-11-2010 17:43 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some interesting comments on Windows Phone 7 from Michael Dell, CEO of his namesake company, during an event in Hong Kong appear to have been redacted. Mr Dell apparently said that it was easier to make a Windows Phone 7 handset than it was to make an Android handset and given that Dell has produced devices for both platforms he'll have seen it from both sides.

The quote itself has now been removed from the Reuters article covering the event, perhaps to save any embarassment? Dell are unlikely to be ditching Android any time soon so they undoutedly won't want their relationship with Google to sour. The interesting thing though is that if the alleged quote is correct then it's quite the coup for Microsoft who are hoping that their nascent platform will be a hit, not just with consumers, but also with device manufacturers, the very people that have been so instrumental in helping to push forward Android's rapid growth.

Facebook For Android Getting Some Much Needed Love    [ 03-11-2010 16:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Good news for Android users at today's Facebook mobile event, the social network has announced that it will be giving its Android app a bit of a polish!  CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the Android version of the app was the poorer version compared with the iPhone app, which comes off as more polished and is certainly more feature rich.

The disparity is apparently down to Facebook not having a big enough team working on their Android app, a rather odd sounding reason from the world's largest social network. At any rate things should be improving, with features like Groups and Places, already present in the iPhone version, soon to make their way to the Android app.

Hopefully the Android side of Facebook won't be playing catch-up anymore, equal priority on updates should be the bare minimum for a platform that is fast becoming the world's leading mobile OS.
