RIM Exec Under Investigation Over Indonesia Stampede    [ 05-12-2011 18:32 ]

Things just seem  to be lurching from bad to worse for RIM these days and the latest developments at the company are sadly no change from that. Andrew Cobham, RIM's president director in Indonesia, has been charged with negligence by the Indonesian authorities over a BlackBerry promotion that got so out of control that more than 40 people were injured.

The promotion involved RIM selling 1,000 Bold 9790 devices for half their usual price. 5,000 people showed up for the event. There was a bit of a stampede as the bracelets entitling the first 1,000 to the promotion were given out and people were crushed in the chaos. At the end of it all 20 people lay unconscious and scores were injured.

The Indonesian authorities haven't taken this lightly and Cobham has been banned from leaving Indonesia whilst the authorities carry out an investigation. Usually RIM's problems come in the form of worse than expected financial results these days, but people getting injured is a whole different matter. RIM's image is already tarnished and increasingly they're being seen as the sick man of the industry. Negligent is hardly a title they will want to add to their list.

Video: Sony's Holodeckesque Movie Experience    [ 05-12-2011 18:15 ]

I must admit to being rather impressed by this effort from Sony. It's their attempt at creating the most immersive movie they could, sort of like apresent day holodeck if you will. The results are pretty good it turns out. None of what you seein the videos is done with CGI, it's just plain old projector tech, PlayStation Move and some helpers dressed head to toe in lycra.

Video: How-To - Porting Siri To The iPhone 4    [ 05-12-2011 18:13 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: The Tech Erra     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some enterprising iOS hackers have come up with the goods and successfully ported Siri onto the iPhone 4 and the 4th generation iPod Touch. Given the the software and know-how is now publicly available several users have been trying this out for themselves, but unfortunately a few have found that the process screws up their camera after installation. Not to worry though because a fix is on the way! If you're feeling brave then take a look at the video below and then maybe give it a try yourself.
