Android Up To 700k Daily Activations    [ 21-12-2011 19:46 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Google     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Andy Rubin, the bringer of Android good news, has announced that the litle robot that could is now activating 700,000 new devices each and every day. It was mere months ago, back in May, that Google was crowing about 400,000 daily Android activations so in the space of just 6 months or so they have almost doubled that. Google also noted that they have now activated in excess of 200 million Android devices in total. The numbers are approaching the limits of what the average person can comprehend or relate to to be honest. Beyond this point the numbers become pretty much irrelevant, it simply becomes a case of ubiquity.

iPhone App Downloads In Decline, Still Making More Money Than Android Though    [ 21-12-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Distimo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Distomo have brought out their 2011 'App Year in Review' report, which, as the name suggests, looks at the state of the app ecosystem over the past year. For starters Windows Phone saw a 400% increase in available apps. That's a pretty impressive level of growth, but of course one has to remember that when one starts with nothing the only way is up so whilst still impressive, it is predictable. What is perhaps less predictable is the fact that iOS apps have been in steady decline, with the number of downloads having consistently fallen throughout the year in the U.S. market.

There was a brief surge in iOS app downloads following the iPhone 4S launch, which was to be expected, but even with the decline in downloads iOS apps continue to make the most money. Indeed the biggest earners on the iOS platform are making around four times as much as the equivalent performing apps on Android. iPad apps are making twice as much as their Android counterparts. That's not a new trend of course; it's been known for some time that iOS tends to produce more paid for apps and that iOS users are more willing to stump up the cash for them than their Android brethren.

Going into next year it will be interesting to see if Apple can reverse this trend, but with Android becoming ever more ubiquitos it might simply be a case that numbers are on Google's side. Still Apple might not be too concerned if the dollars keep flowing in and those are the numbers that really matter.

Face Swap Brings Face Swapping Hilarity To Windows Phone    [ 21-12-2011 19:09 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WMPowerUser     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Filethis under the 'pointless, but fun category'. The boffins at Microsoft have come up with an app that allows you to swap people's faces around in photographs. The app, called Face Swap, is free, for Windows Phone obviously, and allows you to switch around the faces of the different people in a given picture. You can then share the 'hilarity' using either Facebook or Twitter. Why would you want to do such a thing? Presumably due to severe boredome, but nevertheless the technology is now there and I'm sure it will rank up there with the Moon landing and the first heavier than air flight. Have fun!
