Video: Hands-On With the PlayStation Phone    [ 07-01-2011 19:15 ]

The PlayStation phone is almost certainly one of the most anticipated handsets of 2011, whether it lives up to that promise or not is another matter, but for the moment it is a hot topic. In the most recent leak, and there have been so many now, Chinese site it168 has managed to get itself a prototype and conduct a rather nice hands-on with the device.

Let's take a look at the specifications first before we get to the videos:

  • Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU, most likely with a 1 GHz Snapdragon in tow
  • 4 inch LCD screen
  • 5 MP camera
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 512 MB ROM
  • microSD support
  • micro-USB connector
  • second noise cancelling mic

It's interesting to note that the benchmark results for this specific unit were much higher than those for the unit Engadget had a play around with back in early December 2010. The Engadget handset could only muster 24.4 fps whilst this little baby ramps it up to 59.1 fps on Neocore.

To put that in context the Nexus S scored 55.6 fps in the same benchmark test.

Ok so let's take a look at the videos. The first one shows off the interface of the device, whilst the second and third videos show of fits gaming credentials. The third video pitches it against another Android handset so as to give some sort of reference point.

Comscore Figures: Android Now More Popular Than iPhone In U.S.    [ 07-01-2011 18:43 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Comscore have released their most recent set of numbers for the American mobile market and it paints the same general trend as we've been seeing over the past months, but this time Comscore has handed Android the distinction of surpassing the iPhone for the first time.

The September to November 2010 period saw iOS increase its marketshare from 24.2% to 25%, but in the same period Android went from 19.6% to 26%, just pipping the iPhone. However, neither platform was the most popular according to Comscore, that honour went to RIM, which held a 33.5% marketshare, down 4.1% from August though so they may not hold that title too much longer.

In terms of the wider market including feature phones Samsung saw its U.S. marketshare increase from 23.6% to 24.5%. Everyone else saw their marketshare decline, LG losing 0.3% to stand at 20.9%, Motorola down 1.8% to 17% and RIM losing 0.2% for a total of 8.8%.

It's a pretty safe bet to assume that these trends will continue when we get the first results for 2011 and Android may be near, or even at, the top of the heap by then.

iPhone Launching On Verizon On 3rd February?    [ 07-01-2011 18:16 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

In what is hopefully the last chapter of the seemingly never ending story of the CDMA iPhone BGR has confirmed that Apple have put a stop to employee holidays during the period 3rd -6th February. That indicates, BGR says, that the CDMA iPhone, long rumoured to be heading to Verizon, will finally make its appearance.

Verizon apparently uses Thursday as its launch day for new products so that would tie nicely in with a 3rd February holiday blackout. Of course this is still just speculation, but there has so far been no indication of any other Apple product launching in that time period so it could very well be the mythical Verizon iPhone.
