Ballmer: Win Phone 7 Has The Best Looking Handsets    [ 18-01-2011 20:03 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: USA Today     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Steve Ballmer is most definitely one of the more belicose CEOs on the planet, but when it comes to Microsoft's latest baby, Win Phone 7, he's been uncharacteristically quiet. Well he's started doing something about that in an interview with USA Today, in which he claims Win Phone 7 has the best looking handsets in the business.

There’s a lot of competition, but we’ve got the best-looking phones on the market. We’ve got the greatest range of alternatives, the phones, the software, the craftsmanship. It is as good or better than anything out there. We have a lot of work to do. But, we’re in the game. We sold 1.5 million into the carriers.

Ignoring the opening line hyperbole he does actually make a good point in terms of being able to offer customers a range of products. This has been one of Android's greatest strengths, the ability to fit different types of customers, something not so easy for iOS with its single handset. Microsoft has done this whilst also maintaining a commonality amongst the different handsets through a standardised OS and standardised hardware specifications.

Of course it is early days for Windows Phone 7, but Ballmer clearly feels the platform has come out of its shell enough for him to start 'bigging it up'.

Sony Ericsson Holding Off On Win Phone 7 ... Keeping Options Open    [ 18-01-2011 19:47 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Today seems to be Sony Ericsson Day for news as this is the third piece I've written today concerning the company, but it is an interesting one. When Windows Phone 7 first launched there was some speculation over whether Sony Ericsson would or would not release a handset using Microsoft's new platform. There was even a rumour at one point that a Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset was in production.

Of course that hasn't proven true and in an interview with Pocket-lint Sony Ericsson themselves have said that at the moment all thye are doing is keeping an open mind when it comes to Windows Phone 7.

Steve Walker, Sony Ericsson's marketing head, said:

We’ve done a lot of work with Microsoft over the years. We’ve launched a number of 6.xx products, but we made a decision not to bring a product to market in the first wave. We absolutely maintain to keep an open mind towards Windows Phone 7. We continue to engage in a relationship with Microsoft, but we haven’t made any concrete announcement about when and how we would introduce Windows Phone 7 into the portfolio.

That seems fair enough, after all Sony Ericsson is a pretty small company in terms of the global market and certainly when compared with the likes of Nokia, Samsung et al. They don't release the same volume of high-end handsets as those other companies so their focus on Android, which is a proven seller, seems sensible enough for the moment.

Walker did go on to say that 'We shouldn't limit ourselves to one opportunity ..." so clearly Sony Ericsson is considering dipping its tow into Windows Phone 7, but it's probably holding back until it sees whether it is going to really cement itself in the public's consciousness. Recent comments from LG about Win Phone 7's success, or lack thereof as the case may be, would seem to reinforce Sony Ericsson's position.

Video: Hands-On - Xperia arc Camera    [ 18-01-2011 19:22 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Sony Ericsson     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

In their series looking at the new Xperia arc Sony Ericsson have released a hands-on video focusing on the camera (sorry for the bad pun).

They start by saying that the camera is quicker overall with less time needed between shots and that ongoing work before the official launch should see it improve even further. The sensor has been given a boost over earlier models in terms of its sensitivity. This is due to a new sensor being employed, what Sony Ericsson are calling the Exmor R, made by Sony of course.

The user interface has also been tweaked with easier access to certain features e.g. the flash and the video shows off the UI a bit. The video itself was recorded using an Xperia arc by the way, in HD. Thus you can get some iea of what the handset is capable of.

NTT DoCoMo Offers First X10 Multi-Touch Update    [ 18-01-2011 18:39 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: NTT DoCoMo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the biggest, but certainly not the only, annoyances with the Sony Ericsson X10 was its lack of multi-touch. It was an omission so glaring that one wonders what exactly went through the designers' minds when they had it on the drawing board.

Back when the handset was first announced there was all sorts of speculation over  whether it would or wouldn't support multi-touch, but the matter was definitively settled when Sony Ericsson themselves stepped in and announced the hardware simply wouldn't support it. Well that turned out to not be quite as definitive as we first though since Sony Ericsson recently announced that the X10 would, after all, be getting multi-touch support, albeit in a reduced form.

NTT DoCoMo have released the update for their version of the device, making it the first in th world to offer it customers. The multi-touch support is pretty much limited to pinch and zoom so gestures like rotating maps is a no go. The multi-touch support is also not guaranteed to work in all third party apps, but something is better than nothing right?

As to when we can expect to see the update outside of Japan is anyone's guess. Given how long it has taken Sony Ericsson to update the X10 in the past I wouldn't be holding my breath.
