Apple To Launch Cheaper iPhone ... The 3GS?    [ 18-07-2011 17:55 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Another day, another iPhone rumour. Well it's not really a new iPhone rumour, but then when are any of them? Getting to the point BGR are reporting that a source of their's, who they describe as being 'incredibly solid', has informed them that Apple will be launching a cheaper iPhone this year. This cheaper iPhone will sell for $350 or so without a contract.

We've heard it all before with this one ... hold on though because this particular rumour is a little different. BGR's source says that this cheaper iPhone will in fact be none other than ... wait for it ... the iPhone 3GS! Yes apparently the hullabaloo over a cheaper iPhone might in fact result in that iPhone being the iPhone 3GS. Of course it makes perfect sense that Apple should utilise an older model for this purpose, after all they've done it before when a new iPhone is launched. The only difference this time would be that the iPhone 3GS would be marketed as a current product rather than as a has been left over so to speak.

BGR's source was also waxing about Apple still offering the iPhone 4. Presumably this would come in at a price point somewhere between the 3GS at the lower end and the newer iPhone at the higher end. The end result being that Apple would, in theory, have an iPhone to match three different price points.

iPhone 5 Delayed Over Faulty Processor?    [ 18-07-2011 17:49 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: 9to5Mac     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Just as I was writing up the last iPhone rumour I came across this... another iPhone rumour! This time it's centering on yet another bout of speculation that the next generation iPhone will be delayed. How long is this supposed delay likely to last? Well apparently it would see the new iPhone pushed back until next year.

Allegedly the reason for the delay is flaw in the dual-core A5 chip Apple has been planning to use in the iPhone 5. The chips are said to be overheating. Thus the speculation goes that Apple will wait until the A6 becomes available, but that won't be until early next year, hence the delay.

Now if this does prove true then it lends a lot more credence to Apple launching an enhanced version of the iPhone 4 later this year rather than a full blown brand spanking new iPhone. The operative word in all of this though is 'if' because quite frankly it is is all a case of speculation. There are so many rumours flying around, sometimes contradicting each other that it's hard to know what to believe.

Judge Rules HTC Violated Apple Patents    [ 18-07-2011 17:23 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple's legal wranglings seem to be never ending these days, but the Cupertino based company has just scored a victory in at least one battle. A judge with the International Trade Commission has ruled in Apple favour saying that HTC have violated two of Apple's patents.

Apple had filed a motion alleging violation of ten patents, but the judge ruled that only two had been violated. One pertains to a 'system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data' and the other relates to a 'real-time signal processing system for serially transmitted data'. That clears that up then!

What is clear though is that hese two patents are said to be important to the core of the Android platform, Apple's biggest rival for control of the smartphone space. If this ruling is upheld then the ramifications for Android, let alone HTC, could be rather nasty. Indeed Apple's lawsuits on this issue are also currently taking in the likes of Motorola.

For their part HTC issued a statement. I'll let it speak for itself:

Taoyuan, Taiwan–July 16, 2011 – HTC received notice of the ITC judge’s initial determination in the Apple vs. HTC case, ITC No. 337-TA-710. Apple originally asserted 10 of its patents against HTC in March 2010, and the judge ruled today that HTC infringed on 2 patents. HTC does not yet have access to the judge’s full opinion and analysis to determine the details of his findings.

“We are highly confident we have a strong case for the ITC appeals process and are fully prepared to defend ourselves using all means possible,” said Grace Lei, General Counsel of HTC. “We strongly believe we have alternate solutions in place for the issues raised by Apple. We look forward to resolving this case, so we can continue creating the most innovative mobile experiences for consumers.”

The ITC’s Staff Attorney independently studied the facts and argued at trial that HTC does not violate any of the 10 Apple patents.

The ITC has already ruled that Apple is infringing the patents of HTC’s subsidiary S3 Graphics as part of ITC Investigation No. 337-TA-724. HTC announced its acquisition of S3Graphics on July 6, 2011.

Video: KDDI Mood Sensing App For Android    [ 18-07-2011 12:18 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Mashable     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I love quirky technology, especially when it ties in with my mobile phone. This mood monitoring sensor developed by KDDI in Japan is certainly quirky, if of questionable usefulness. The premise behind it is pretty simple; you wired yourself up to the sensor and then activate an application on your connected Android device. By interacting with the app, in this case bashing away at the screen, you can then create a chart to show how calm or stressed you are. It's useless pap basically, but who said smartphones were just for calling people?
