Ad Revenue: Android & iOS Neck & Neck    [ 17-06-2011 17:58 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Millenial Media via IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some new figures on the state of the smartphone market for you to take a butchers at! This time it's Millenial Media, a market research company funnily enough, that has offered up the data. The data is based upon ad impressions for each platform, which are then used to reflect the market share each platform holds.

Ok let's get into the figures then! In April of this year the lead platform was Android with 53% of the market, which should come as little surprise really. iOS dropped 1%, but Windows Phone rose 0.5% to grab its first full 1% of market share. Are those two statistics related? It certainly appears likely. RIM, increasingly lauded as the 'sick man' of the smartphone world, managed to cling on to a 17% share. Symbian ... well Symbian's prospects are about as good as Tyrannosuarus Rex's were on the eve of a the Baptistina asteroid impact.

Ad revenue for each platform was also calculated. iOS takes the lead here with 45% of ad sales, but Android isn't too far behind with 43%. RIM limps in with 9% of ad sales, but that's still better than Windows Phone and Symbian with their frankly paltry 3%.

In short Android is charging ahead; iOS is doing well; Windows Phone is finally making an impression; RIM is clinging on for dear life, and Symbian's doctors are preparing to pull the plug.

Nokia To Launch Win Phone Handset In Europe & Russia First    [ 17-06-2011 17:37 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: WMPowerUsers & Eldar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's partnership withMicrosoft threw up a very obvious question ... when would we see Nokia's first Windows Phone handset? Well we still don't know the exact time table, but we do now know where the handset(s) will be appearing first. Nokia VP Victor Saejis has let it be known that the first wave of handsets will be launching across western Europe.

There are six markets mentioned: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. Notice anything odd in that list? Yes that's right folks Finland, Nokia's homeland, isn't mentioned. However, adding a little extra detail to the proceedings is our very own Eldar who tweeted earlier today that Russia will also be amongst the first markets to see Nokia's first Windows Phone device.

Angry Birds Still Being Downloaded 1 Million A Day    [ 17-06-2011 17:36 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: thenextweb     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

We've not heard much from Angry Birds of late, certainly not as much as we used to hear when Angry Birds mania was careering along at full tilt. Well in order to rectify that Peter Vesterbacka, the Mighty Eagle himself, gave a talk at the Mobile 2.0 Europe - openIDEAS event this week.

During the talk Vesterbacka mentioned that Angry Birds is being downloaded a whopping 1 million times per day. Now you may remember that late last year Rovio made the claim that the Android version of the game had notched up an impressive 2 million downloads in two days. That means that the same trend has continued for more than 8 months! That is an incredibly impressive track record in anyone's book.

The success of Angry Birds was attributed to 'strong branding' by Vesterbacka, but to be blunt it seems far more likely that the game's continued popularity and success are more to do with the seemingly constant updates it receives. Oh and the fact that it's available for just about every device on the planet from your iPhone to your Glaxy S to your toaster (well maybe not that last one, but why ever not?!).

O2 Won't Be Selling PlayBook In The UK    [ 17-06-2011 14:41 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The BlackBerry PlayBook's UK launch is in full swing ... except for one small snag. O2 won't be selling it. O2 is one of the largest British networks so for it to take the decision not to offer the device to its customers is a pretty big deal. Why the reluctance? Well O2 say that there are "... some issues with the end to end customer experience".

O2 are seemingly working alongside RIM to solve these issues and O2 might release other tablet devices from RIM in the future. They may even release the PlayBook itself at some point, presumably whenever these issues get resolved (if the device isn't obsolete by that point).

Now this looks good for O2 from a certain point of view. After all it is a good thing for a company to look out for the interests of its customers. However, the other British networks apparently don't have a problem with the PlayBook so is this a case of them simply not caring or of O2 having impossibly high standards?
