Every HP PC To Run webOS    [ 09-03-2011 19:55 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Starting next year every PC Hewlett-Packard ships is going to be capable of running webOS according to CEO Leo Apotheker.

HP of course snapped up webOS when they bought Palm last year and so the move isn't too surprising really. Especially when one consideres that webOS isn't a major presence in the market right now and HP will no doubt be looking to do what they can to get as many developers onboard with their platform as they possibly can.

Currently just 2.2% of HP's revenues come from software, the lion's share, some 70%, comes from hardware. Apotheker commented that "I happen to know something about software" and said he wanted to build "a massive platform". This is certainly a big step in that direction.

Video: 64 GB iPhone Prototype    [ 09-03-2011 19:38 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: M.I.C. Gadget via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A 64 GB iPhon has apparently turned up ... I say apparently because the authenticity of it is still unknown. Having said that there are some clues that indicate it is indeed an official product and not some clever knock-off.

The back of the device has the designation 'XXGB' and both the model number and FCC ID have been blanked out. This would seem to suggest a prototype, a theory given further credence by the fact that the silver ring around the camera lens is missing.

M.I.C. Gadget managed to capture the beast on film and had a poke about inside the phone, which do look to be official. Engadget reports that they have managed to get some confirmation from people with access to Apple's system, which says that the model was manufactured back at the start of last year.

So in all probablity it's a prototype, which never made it to market, but Apple fans will no doubt hold out some hope of it making an appearance publicly in the not too distant future.

Android Passes BlackBerry OS In Web Traffic    [ 09-03-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: StatCounter     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Every day seems to bring along yet another statistic that shows Android briskly marching past the competition and today is no different. In the graph below you can see Android overtaking BlackBerry OS in web traffic requests for the first time.

The data comes from StatCounter, which monitors some 3 million pages and 15 billion page hits so the data sample is pretty wide. Symbian, despite being the sick man of the mobile platforms, still manages to retain the top position with around a 30% share of traffic.

BlackBerry OS has been steadily declining since November of last year and currently stands at 14.52% whilst Android, which has been steadily climbing since June of last year now stands at 15.16%. It's arguably a testament to BlackBerry users' loyalty that the difference between them isn't more (at the moment anyway), but looking at the trends here that probably won't be the case for much longer.

A quick note on Apple's performance here; iOS is still in second place and comfortably so, but there has been a slight decline over the past few months. That might reverse itself once the Verizon iPhone has had time to kick in though.

Toshiba Says Its Tablet Is 'Superior' To iPad 2    [ 09-03-2011 19:23 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Toshiba, like many other companies, is getting ready to enter the increasingly lucrative tablet market with their first product, a Honeycomb powered tablet that is set to launch sometime within the next few months. They're not entering quietly either with one Toshiba executive declaring that their product is superior to the iPad 2.

Rob Wilkinson, Toshiba's General Manager for Information Systems Division in Australia made the point:

We believe that our device is superior to the Apple device, it may be a little heavier (773g), but it does have a lot of features that the iPad 2 does not have.

Them thar is fighting words! So what does the Toshiba tablet bring to the table that the iPad 2 doesn't? Well getting past Wilkinson's obvious bias the Toshiba device does have some features the iPad 2 lacks. For example, SD card support, a higher resolution screen (1280x800), a USB port and a removable battery. I'm not sure that qualifies it as being 'superior', but I guess the customers will make their own minds up
