iPhone 5 Release Delayed?    [ 30-03-2011 19:40 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Apple Insider     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Summer is just around the corner (well as long as you don't live in the UK anyway), which means that it should be time for a new iPhone. Every year Apple fans look forward to the summer launch of the latest and greatest iPhone ... maybe not this year though ...

Macotakara.jp is reporting that Apple have yet to actually place any orders with its manufacturing partners. That's significant because the iPhone 5 (or whatever it will be called) should be in production by now for a summer launch. If it is the case that production has not yet started it could be a result of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, which has affected component manufacturing.

Further speculation is aroused by the same site saying that the next iPhone won't be a contributor to Apple's 2011 fiscal year. What that means for customers is that the launch could be put back to October. One Gartner analyst, Michael Gartenberg, commented that the expected summer release cycle of new iPhones wasn't set in stone:

You get caught up in patterns, and it holds true, until it doesn't. There is no reason for Apple to follow a predictable yearly pattern, and it keeps their competition off guard a little bit.

Indeed the Apple WWDC 2011 event scheduled for 6th June has been described by Apple as being software orientated this year. That would at least seem to suggest a move away from big hardware announcements i.e. the iPhone.

If the next iPhone does come later than expected it probably won't be by more than a few months. That's just common sense talking. Apple have a single handset in the market with nothing else to fall back on so they really can't afford to let the competition steal a march on them for too long.

Rumour: Microsoft Launching NFC Payments This Year?    [ 30-03-2011 19:06 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Bloomberg are citing two anonymous sources (surprise surprise) as saying that Microsoft is moving ahead rapidly with plans to introduce NFC paymnets to Windows Phone 7. Apparently support for the technology could be included as early as the next version of Windows Phone 7 with the hardware following suit sometime this year.

Of course this is just a rumour at this stage, but other companies are also looking at this technology seriously. Google, for example, is said to be working with credit card companies to get mobile payments off the ground and RIM is apparently in dispute with some American networks over a trial with Bank of America.

Apple, ever different to everyone else, is apparently not looking at NFC payments this year. If so and the rest are Apple might just find itself left behind on this trend.

You remember that interview Mike Tyson gave to promote the launch of his new iPhone game? Well here we have the advert for said game and it features a rather brave soul punching Tyson on the arm. Personally I would have let him have the iPhone without an argument!

Softbank Helping Japanese Victims: Free Phones, Jobs, Expenses    [ 30-03-2011 18:36 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: 91Mobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Not too long ago we reported on how Apple were doing their bit to help their employees and families affected by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Well now Japanese network Softbank has stepped up and is also doing its best to help those affected by the disasters and they are really going out of their way with it too.

Masayoshi Son, Softbank's CEO, has announced that Softbank will replace any iPhones lost or damaged as a result of the disasters and after a suggestion made to Son on Twitter he has also announced that children orphaned by the disasters will be given free phones. It doesn't end there though because not only will orphans receive free phones Softbank will also cover their costs until they are 18. That is very generous indeed!

Softbank are extending help beyond their own customers though with Son announcing that he will help to pay the telephone bills of orphans who are on other Japanese networks e.g. NTT DoCoMo.

Last, but most certainly not least, Son has also stated that Softbank will be covering the living expenses of 1,200 people being relocated from Tamura, a badly affected town, and will offer provide them with jobs.

It's really heartwarming to see such generosity and decency from a large company in the face of such an appalling disaster. Hopefully more follow Masayoshi Son's example.

Dell & HP Line Up To Criticise iPad    [ 30-03-2011 17:27 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Apple Insider     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple come in for criticism on a regular basis, some of it is justified and some of it is ... well just stupid to be frank. Recent comments from Dell and HP executives fits firmly in the latter camp.

Andy Lark, Dell's Global Marketing head honcho, has been sounding off about the iPad and in short he doesn't think it's too hot. "Apple is great if you've got a lot of money and live on an island. It's not so great if you have to exist in a diverse, open, connected enteprise; simple things become quite complex" Lark said. Now all that sounds like fair comment, after all the iPad is part of a closed system and that's very much a valid debate. However, Lark continued his criticism and delve dinto a bit of fantasy by saying that an iPad with a keyboard, mouse and case would set customers back $1,500 - $1,600. ll of that hardware would actually total around $1,100, a good bit short of his estimate.

Criticism also came from HP in the form of Stephen DeWitt, a vide president at the company. He aimed his criticism at the [sarcasm mode on] consumer relevant area that is partner relations [sarcasm mode off] Apple's relationship with partners saying that it was 'transactional' and that HP was far more friendly towards partners. The thing here though is that this really doesn't concern the end user, they don't care about a company's relationship with another as long as they can buy the product they want.

The bottom line is that whatever you may think of Apple the iPad has been a roaring success with some 16 million or so sold and Apple with a commanding lead in the tablet market. The iPad has its faults sure, but criticism is better leveled when it is accurate and relevant otherwise it just looks desperate.
