Samsung Announces 3 Million Galaxy S II Pre-Orders    [ 09-05-2011 19:13 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

You remember Samsung saying that they wanted to sell 10 million Galaxy S IIs? Well it looks like they're well on their way to achieving that figure as the company is reporting the pre-order of some 3million devices. The device is already available in some markets so some of those orders will now be actual sales no doubt. The Galaxy S II is going on sale around the globe in 120 countries in an effort to break the 10 million barrier. The original Galaxy S did brisk business too having sold more than 10 million units so it's certainly feasible for the Galaxy S II to emulate or exceed that.

ComScore Figures Place Android & Samsung Top Of The Heap    [ 09-05-2011 18:28 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: ComScore     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

ComScore have their most recent figures for the American market out and the headlines are that Android is doing what Android has always been doing i.e. succeeding and that Samsung is leading the pack on the hardware side of things.

Samsung have a 24.5% share of the American market (as of March this year). Now that's down very slightly from December last year, having fallen 0.3%, but that's still enough to keep them in the number one spot. Fellow Korean company LG takes the number two position with 20.9%, having neither fallen nor climbed since December and Motorola comes in third with 15.8%. Apple for their part were the only manufacturer to have actually grown since December, rising 1.1%, but they have just 7.9% of the overall market.

In terms of the smartphone market, however, Apple holds a rather more impressive 25.5%, which places them third. That's despite having risen 0.5% since December and RIM having fallen 4.% in the same period. RIM, despite their losses, manage to retain their number two spot. Do I even need to tell you who is number one? Yes that's right Android is once again the top smartphone platform in the U.S. with a 34.7% share of the market.

The interesting thing with the smartphone figures though is just how little impact both Windows Phone and webOS seem to be making with a 7.5% and 2.8% share respectively. Both of those platforms actually saw a fall in their marketshare from December. Windows Phone has been out for a while now so it has had a chance to set some roots down, but as yet those roots just don't seem to be taking.

Forbes 'Inside Apple' Gives A Look Into Apple Mindset    [ 09-05-2011 18:18 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Forbes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some of you may have already seen the Fortune article entitled 'Inside Apple' doing the rounds, but for those who haven't I felt I needed to mention it here. The article, as the title suggests, concerns Apple, but more specifically it takes a peek into Apple's closed off corporate world and dishes out some very interesting info. The often cited example from the article if Steve Jobs reaction to the rather messy MobileMe launch back in 2008. Let's just say that Jobs wasn't a happy chappy and had a few choice words for the MobileMe team.

Another interestng anecdote is Jobs' 'pep talk'to new vice presidents where they are told about the difference between a 'Janitor and Vice-President'. That difference, according to Jobs, is essentially that janitors are allowed to make excuses for failure, vice-presidents are not.

I'm not a big fan of paid walled off content, but seriously this looks like an incredibly interesting piece so the $4.99 Forbes are charging for the digital version could well be worth it. Oh and you can buy their magazine and see it there too if you still read things on paper.
