Windows Phone 7 Hit With Lawsuit Over Tracking Allegations    [ 02-09-2011 20:00 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Microsoft is the latest company to become embroiled in a tracking scandal. A lawsuit filed in Seattle alledges that Windows Phone 7 handsets can track a user's location when the camera application has been activated and also alledges that the tracking continues even when the tracking software has been disabled by the user. Apple faced similar criticism over allegations that the iPhone was tracking, and maintaining a record of, a user's location over the course of their time using the device. Microsoft has so far declined to comment on the matter, but assuming the lawsuit goes ahead we will no doubt be hearing a lot more about it.

San Fran Police: We Have No Record Of A Lost iPhone    [ 02-09-2011 19:24 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: SF Weekly     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A small update on yesterday's CNET report that an iPhone 5 prototype had allegedly gone missing in a San Francisco bar in a scene reminiscent of last year's Gizmodo scoop. The San Francisco police department are saying that they have no record of such an investigation. SF Weekly are reporting that Officer Albie Esparza said "I don't know who [the author's] source is, but we don't have any record of any such an [sic] investigation going on at this point".

The story from CNET was that the device had been found in a man's home when police went to speak with him. However, Esparza stated that neither of the two police stations nearest that address had any record of such a visit. Even more interesting though is the fact that Esparza told SF Weekly that even though the lack of an investigation was discussed with CNET they still ran the story.

Samsung: We're 'Never' Pursuing A webOS Deal    [ 02-09-2011 19:05 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With HP all but killing off webOS as a smartphone platform (despite their corporate speak to the contrary) rumours immediately started as to who might be interested in possibly acquiring the OS. Top of that list for many people was Samsung. It was a pretty flimsy rumour to begin with of course given that Samsung are already using three different platforms i.e. Android, Windows Phone 7 and their own Bada. Nevertheless the rumours persisted.

Well Samsung's head man, CEO Choi Gee Sung, has firmly quashed any such hopes. Speaking at the IFA he stated that Samsung would "never" get onboard with webOS. You can't get much more final than that now can you? Just for good measure though he went on to say that he didn't think very highly of the trend of "acquiring an operating system".

Eric Schmidt: Steve Jobs Is The 'Best' CEO    [ 02-09-2011 18:42 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BBC     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's easy to forget that at one time Google and Apple made a pretty cosy couple. The two companies were on friendly terms, so much so that Eric Schmidt was even sitting on Apple's board of directors. You wouldn't know that now of course given the increasing anomosity between the two, especially when it comes to the massive global patent war Android find sitself embroiled in. However, we saw something of a harking back to former times in an interview Eric Schmidt recently gave where he rated Steve Jobs as the best company boss of the last century.

Schmidt was speaking on stage at the Salesforce.com Dreamforce conference when he made the comments. He saisd that Jobs was "probably the best" company boss in 50 or 100 years, responding to a question from the audience. Justifying such exalted praise Schmidt cited the fact that Jobs had built up Apple into apowerful company, not once, but twice.

Maybe there's more love in the tech industry than we tought?
