Amazon Launching Devices On The Cheap (Really Cheap)    [ 28-09-2011 16:35 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Amazon     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Amazon has been busy hawking some new devices today; three new e-readers and and Android tablet. The e-readers come in the form of the Kindle Touch, Kindle Touch 3G and the Kindle. The tablet is the Kindle Fire.

The e-readers look to be pretty standard fare; 6-inch screens and sleek (they're made from magnesium and plastic alloys ... oh fancy!). The Kindle Fire, as mentioned, is a tablet device running Android, but of course skinned with an Amazon UI and sporting Amazon services. Now what sets these devices apart from the crowd is the price... they're cheap. The Kindle starts at $70, with the Touch priced at $99 and the Touch 3G at $149. That's pretty good going, but the Kindle Fire is the one that really takes the award here ... just $199. Pretty cheap for a tablet.

Of course Amazon will no doubt be looking to get people into their ecosystem if they are practically giving these devices away so perhaps that will be the true price to pay?

Microsoft-Samsung Sign Patent Deal    [ 28-09-2011 16:33 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung may still be embroiled in a seemingly intractable legal dispute with Apple in courts around the world, but the company has just signed a cross-licensing deal on patens with Microsoft. The deal will also see the two companies working more closely on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.

The headline from the deal, so to speak, is that Samsung will be stumping up a feee to Microsoft for every Android device it sells. It's a similar deal in that respect to one inked between Microsoft and HTC. The agreement will also see Samsung becoming more involved with Windows Phone, a move that could be interesting to watch in terms of Nokia, which signed a comprehensive agreement with Microsoft to develop Windows Phone devices earlier this year.

Microsoft is now looking at Motorola, recently acquired by Google, a company, Microsoft says, is "the only major Android smartphone manufacturer in the US without a license".
