Google Nexus Tablet To Enter Production In April    [ 24-02-2012 21:15 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: CNET     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ever since Eric Schmidt let slip that Google was planning on releasing "... a tablet of the highest quality" there has been the obvious speculation over the device. Would it be high-end and compete with the iPad or lower-end and compete with Amazon's offerings? When would it see the light of day? Well Richard Shim, an analyst with DisplaySearch, is going on the record as saying that it's going to be a 7-inch affair with the Nexus branding. Shim further says that it will be levelled at the likes of Amazon's Kindle Fire so we can probably expect a similar price tag. The initial production run is said to be in the order of 1.5-2 million units and the 7-inch display will reportedly be in the order of 1280x800, which is a better affair than Amazon's 1024x600 effort. Actual production of the device will allegedly begin this April, which means a release date could be as ealy as Q2.

Nokia Is Now World's Biggest Windows Phone Manufacturer    [ 24-02-2012 19:03 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia is now the world's top Windows Phone manufacturer according to a report by research firm Strategy Analytics. Nokia's feat is actually quite impressive considering they entered the Windows Phone business a full year after competitors like HTC and Samsung. Even being a year behind their rivals they have managed to overtake them and become the premier manufacturer for devices using Microsoft's mobile platform. It's also worth noting that Nokia had just two models of phone using Windows Phone available during Q4 2011, neither of which was available Stateside, and with those two models it managed to get just short of a million units into sales channels.

Overall Windows Phone remains a very small part of the overall global smartphone business, Android and iOS still dominate. However, Strategy Analytics noted that shipments of Windows Phone devices grew by 36% during Q4 2011 and that the overall outlook showed "... tentative signs of growth". Of course that is still a long way from Microsoft actually having a powerful presence in the global smartphone market, but Nokia seems to be the one carrying that hope forwards and it will be Nokia, if things keep going the way they are, which is best placed to reap the rewards of such an outcome.
