Review GSM phone Hyundai H-MP738
Hyundai consists of many branches that deal with different things each. Phones Hyundai were known by the name of the company Hyundai but similar products are manufactured by Hyundai Electronics. The models differ greatly both in design and in software. Speaking about Hyundai Electronics we can say the model line has already been formed and all the models are already available in Russia.
Hyundai H-MP738 is intended for a low-end segment and represents a cheap clamshell with rich appearance. The first peculiarity is the edging of the external screen. It is designed as stylish clock with Roman figures as hours. The external screen is pseudocolor and consists of two layers. An upper blue layer serves as a display, a caller's number (it's got into two lines) and service icons are shown here. The layer is monochrome and the inner layer is two-color. The solution is very interesting and I can remember no any similar phone. The outer screen not only looks unordinary and original making a unique appearance of the phone but it's also practical. In the majority of cases the outer screen is STN and that means it's hard to make anything out on it in a sunny day. This problem is absent here at all. The screen is dark in the standby mode and the clock is seen not always but the backlighting may be turned on by a single touch.
The model is produced in various color solutions (Black, Red, Shampane, Silver, Blue) and all of them are interesting. The colors of a front panel and inner part differ and side surfaces and a back are silvery. A rotating fold is made of a chromed plastic, a rubber lining protecting the fold from scratches in an open mode is seen in a gap. Unfortunately, this protection is temporary because scratches in the same place of folds' joining appear in two-three weeks.
There is a headset connector on the top of the device and an interface one on the bottom. A coupled volume level button may be seen on the left-side surface.
The dimensions are typical for this class (83x44.2x22.7 mm) and the weight of 80 grams is rather comfortable. The device is easy to open with one hand though closing the phone is not finished automatically.
Inside you'll see an STN 65K screen with the resolution of 128x128 pixels (27x28 mm). Up to 5 text and two service lines are shown. The screen fades in the sun and that's logical for such displays. The quality of reflecting colors is average, the device is comparable with phones of its segment but not more. That's necessary to understand that this device is more a low-end solution in the clamshell class.
The keypad keeps to the whole style, keys are rectangular with a line of transparent plastic that shines pleasantly. The backlighting is blue and characters placed near the keys are seen almost in all conditions. A disadvantage of the phone is a tight and little motion of the keys. The keypad is not comfortable when used for long. A four-positional navi key has the same problems.
A 600 mAh Li-Ion battery serves as a back side. According to the manufacturer the device is capable of working for 240 hours in the standby mode and up to 4.5 hours in the talk mode. In Moscow the phone worked for about 3 days with 40 minutes of talks. Full recharging takes about 1.5 hours.
Entering the main menu is possible by moving the navi button up. The menu is pleasant, all the icons that are actually pictures are animated and a navigational bar is in the bottom. There is fast navigation using number series but the items of the main menu are not numbered. Tips for soft-keys use are also absent but that's possible to get used to this peculiarity of the phone rather soon. The submenu is represented with vertical lists.
Localization is committed well and the majority of items is translated clearly. Russian font is thinner and looks more original than English. That's curious that English localization is committed worse (abbreviations are wrong, bad word divisions). The device is prepared for a Russian user much better.
Phone book. Up to 200 names are possible to save in the memory, there is a possibility to keep up to 3 phone numbers, assign a group, e-mail address, ICQ number and choose personal picture for a name. The general list represents both numbers from the internal memory and from a SIM-card, there is a search by the first letter and in a separate group. Personal call signal may be assigned to a group.
Messages. A sender's name is displayed in a message list, in some seconds the first line of the backlighted message is scrolled. Up to 20 messages are possible to keep in the internal memory. EMS is supported, there are preset pictures, melodies and emotion icons. Everything is rather plain and clear, text input is available with predictive input T9 and without as well.
Internet. The device supports GPRS batch communications, it also has a wap-browser version 1.2.1 that rouses no cavils while work.
Call lists. There are three lists in the phone and each contains 20 entries with time and date specified. Call duration is also indicated for each call. The same calls are not summed up, they are kept separately.
Time. Alarm clock may be set once, daily, weekly and monthly. Sound level may be adjusted for an alarm signal. The function of turning on and off the phone according to the schedule is present, it really helps saving a battery charge. It also may be set once or recurrent.
Settings. Choosing a language, a possibility to assign one of four functions to a right soft-key (time, settings, parameters, games). One of 6 preset pictures may serve as wall-paper. That's pleasant that a light level for the main screen is adjustable, backlighting also may be turned off for the external screen and the keypad.
Voice indication of key pressure and moving along the main menu is realized in the phone. The function refused working in all the profiles except for the default one.
Profiles allow choosing a signal volume, a vibra working mode, SMS alert and some other settings. Everything is rather plain.
Tools. A plain file manager is the first item. It allows viewing such folders as Sounds, Pictures, Messages. In Russian software version these folders will have Russian names not depending on the menu language.
Notepad is an utility for entering short text notes.
Calendar - displaying dates a month before is not customary and esthetic. On the other hand such a calendar is quite comfortable. Various events may be created for days, the type is chosen from several preset ones (are scrolled cyclically in a one field, there is no any list on the screen). Time and melody are set for an event.
Calculator works, as it should.
Black list - blocking all incoming calls from these numbers, templates are supported, then blocking the numbers matching a mask (first numbers of a phone number).
Games. There are two games Fillip and Hurricane. The first one is an interesting arcade and in the second you pilot a plain or it's better a space ship and defeat your enemies.
The quality of connection rouses no cavils and the volume of the loud speaker is enough for any conversations. Noises and pickups from the screen are heard in the loudspeaker when the volume is maximum. The device is comparable with similar phones by the second echelon companies. The power of the vibracall is average while the volume of the 32-tones polyphonic alert is enough for the majority of situations. It may be missed in the street but it's heard perfectly indoors. Just to tell the truth, the signal resembles a 16-tones one but not 32. The loudspeaker makes bad sounding of melodies when the volume is maximum.
The excellent design is a strong point. Such qualitative body and interesting design of the front panel practically may not be found in the devices of this class. The external screen is unique in some kind and the manufacturer managed to make its weakness into strength. The device looks much more expensive tan it is and that makes it look better against a background of rivals. A qualitative design of the box, the presence of the headset in the package make the device unordinary in its segment. By the way, even a charger has a silvery edging and looks stylish.
There are no any alternatives for the device in its segment considering its price of 135-140 USD. The nearest rivals cost 150-160 USD and look plainer. The phone is ordinary in functions and resembles low-end models. For instance, such clamshells as Motorola v180, Siemens CF62 have better screens and are more functional. But they are certainly inferior in design, they are not so stylish and reveal low-end products at once.
The device has no any critical problems and may be recommended to everyone who uses a phone for calls, has a stylish thing and wants to stress his difference from the others. The model is interesting to girls and women but will also suit men (at a ratio of 60 to 40 as for us). The model is extremely interesting for regional markets and may become a bestseller shortly.
