British Networks Announce (Insane) Xperia Play Pricing    [ 14-04-2011 20:30 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Recombu     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Normally I refrain from reporting on region and network specific deals and price plans given how widespread our readership is, but I'm making an exception in this case and I think you'll understand why. British network 3 have announced price plans for the Xperia Play aka the PlayStation phone and to put it midly it isn't cheap.

The handset itself will cost you £99 with a two year contract at £35 per month. Now to put that in perspective for non-British readers in the UK almost every handset is free with a two year contract costing £35 per month. In case you think this is just 3 being greedy Orange have a similar deal that sees the handset priced at £99 with a £40 per month deal. Now the odd thing here is the PAYG price of the handset, which is £499. That's a lot yes, but no more so than many other handsets that are free on the sort of contracts I just mentioned. The question therefore is why does the Xperia Play cost so much upfront?

A little more perspective is given when one considers that 3 offers the iPhone 4 for £19 on a £40 per month contract.

Granted that these prices are for the UK, but if this is the sort of pricing we are going to see from networks in general some serious questions need to be asked about how accessible the Xperia Play will actually be i.e. is it going to sell well? That's an especially valid question when one consideres that after having bought the handset most people are probably going to want to buy more games for it, further increasing the overall cost associated with the handset. When I spoke with Sony Ericsson back at MWC in February there were obviously no specifics given about pricing, but the impression I received was that it would be comparable to other devices in the market. That doesn't seem to be the case here ...

Xperia Acro Puts On Weight    [ 14-04-2011 20:22 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

You remember the Sony Ericsson Acro leak? Of course you do! Well maybe. At any rate a new image of the handset has cropped up, this time giving a good look at it from just about every possible angle. It's very similar looking to its Xperia arc sibling, but with a bit more meat on its bones. That's a result of some additions made for its release in the Japanese market. Additions include the likes of NFC, IrDA (yes they do still use infra-red in Japan!) and of course DTV.

Video: Pixi Running webOS 2.1    [ 14-04-2011 19:42 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: PreCentral     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A pre-production Palm Pixi has been spotted over at Pre Central and the interesting thing is that it's running webOS 2.1. The green dots on the keyboard signal that the handset pictured is indeed pre-production and some have even wondered whether this might be a new model. More likely is the theory that it's a hack.

Now as if the picture wasn't interesting enough there's a video too! The handset looks to be pretty damn nippy it has to be said with the interface being responsive and fluid.

No Sense 3.0 For Older Devices    [ 14-04-2011 18:43 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: HTC     Translation by:    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

So the HTC Sensation will be rolling outwith the new improved Sense 3.0 UI and no doubt all you fine folk who own an older HTC handset will be chomping at the bit to find out when you will get the update to Sense 3.0. Well ...

... you won't. Yes chaps sorry to say, but older HTC devices will not be getting Sense 3.0. It isn't just a rumour by the way, the news comes from none other than HTC themselves.

So that as they say is that.
