Twitter Buying TweetDeck?    [ 19-04-2011 19:08 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: WSJ     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's one of those stories where you wonder why you haven't heard it before because it makes so much sense... Twitter is apparently looking to buy TweetDeck. The report comes from the Wall Street Journal and describes Twitter as being in 'advanced talks' to make the acquisition. Supposedly any such deal could be worth up to $50 million, but as you might expect neither side are saying anything about it yet.

TweetDeck, despite its popularity, is a relatively small company with just 15 employees, but as mentioned it's PC Twitter client is ludicrously popular. Buying them up Twitter would be in a position to immediately roll out a desktop client in addition to the mobile versions it already offers. As I said it just makes too much sense not to be true!

Video: Is This White iPhone Running An Unseen Beta iOS Build?    [ 19-04-2011 19:02 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Tinhte     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Let me start by saying that I hate the white iPhone. No I do not hate the iPhone, just the white one. I've been hearing about it month after month and watching some people go gaga over the possibility of Apple releasing an identical version of their current iPhone ... only in white. With that out of the way let's jump straight to a couple of videos of this particularly overhyped beast that surfaced on a Vietnamese forum, Tinhte.

There is actually an interesting angle to this story though because the iPhone shown in the videos is apparently running an unreleased version of iOS. Some of the changes include the multi-tasking icons having been replaced with a view of each app's current state. There is also a new 'Search iPhone' option at the top of the screen, which, as you might expect, takes you into Spotlight. The second of the two videos shows this particular iPhone to be running with a storage capacity of 64 GB.

Tech Lawsuit #1,237,155: Apple Sues Samsung    [ 19-04-2011 18:33 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Computer World     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

What would the tech world be without that age old tradition of the lawsuit? We'll probably never know because tech companies seem to enage in lawsuits with each other as if it were a sport and today we have another one; Apple is suing Samsung. What's it all about? Well simply put Apple says Samsung are copycats.

The lawsuit alledges that Samsung "instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple's innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple's valuable intellectual property rights."

The products Apple highlights as examples of this alleged infringement are the Epic 4G, Captivate, Indulge, Nexus S, Galaxy S 4G and the Galaxy Tab. Apple goes as far as saying that design features like 'rounded corners' and a 'curving back' are examples of infringement. Presumably Apple believes it invented the concept of a rounded corner then? Perhaps along with the algebra and trigonometry necessary to formulate them? I digress though. If you want to know how this will almost certainly play out just take a gander at any other tech lawsuit and expect some sort of deal to be worked out and some money to change hands between the two companies.

Sony Ericsson Stays In The Black    [ 19-04-2011 17:19 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Sony Ericsson     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Quarter one is well and truly over and as such Sony Ericsson have published their sales figures. Naysayers may very well jump on the fact that the number of units shipped fell from Q4 last year (11.2 million compared with 8.1 million), but of course Q4 does include the busy Christmas shopping period so it's not really a fair comparison. A better comparison would be to compare Q1 2011 with Q1 2010 and in doing so we see a decline again, although not as pronounced. Sales for Q1 came in at 1.145 billion euros, again down from both Q1 2010 and Q4 2010 although operating income remained relatively steady year on year.

Of particular interest though is the role of Android because of the 8.1 million handsets shipped around 60% were smartphones and of course the vast majority of Sony Ericsson smartphones these days are Android devices. Sony Ericsson has bet heavily on Android after finding little success with Symbian or  the old Windows Mobile (although some may say that was more a case of the hardware). At any rate this left Sony Ericsson with a net profit for the quarter of 11 million euros, which, whilst down from Q1 2010, is actually an increase from Q4 2010!
