Amazon Gets To Use 'App Store' Name    [ 08-07-2011 12:21 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Whilst the legal dispute between Apple and Samsung rolls merrily on its way the dispute between Apple and Amazon over the use of the term 'app store' has taken a turn in Amazon's favour. A U.S. judge has ruled that Apple can't stop Amazon from using the term, which was basically what the whole issue is about.

The ruling says that Apple hasn't yet established that Amazon using the term 'app store' would confuse customers with regards to Apple's own App Store. Apple is involved in a similar dispute with Mmicrosoft, but if this ruling is anything to go by then that lawsuit is looking shaky now. Apple does have a trademark pending on the term 'App Store' so if that is granted then no doubt there will be further litigation on the horizon. For the moment though the Amazon app store is able to charge ahead.

Infographic: World Data Storage    [ 08-07-2011 12:15 ]

I came across this rather interesting infographic detailing the world's data storage. The infographic is based upon a study conducted over 20 years from 1987 to 2007 and reveals that by 2007 there was approximately 295 exabytes of data being stored around the world. To put that figure in perspective it would be the equivalent of covering all the land area of America and China with books stacked 13 high!

Apple Tries To Block Samsung Products From America    [ 08-07-2011 11:27 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Yet another chapter in the seemingly endless saga that is the Apple vs Samsung legal dispute. When we left it last Samsung had filed a request to have Apple products blocked from sale in the U.S. whilst also dropping a lawsuit against Apple to 'streamline' its legal strategy. Now Apple has returned the favour and is asking the International Trade Commission to block the imports of the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab to the United States.

Like Samsung's request to the ITC before them, Apple's request will likely take a while to be processed and a decision rendered. In fact it could take up to 18 months and that's if the ITC decides it will actually look into the request. Meanwhile any one with even a shred of sanity will have long since stopped caring about this increasingly ridiculous farce.
