iPhone 4S Only Has 512 MB Of RAM?    [ 11-10-2011 15:02 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Eurogamer     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Unconfirmed reports are suggesting that the iPhone 4S is shipping with 512 MB of RAM, not the 1 GB that the handset was widely expected to feature. The information is sourced from a developer working on Infinity Blade and the website Appvv. Obviously the devs working on Infinity Blade will be familiar with the iPhone 4S and its underlying hardware (otherwise they just got really lucky making their game look so damned gorgeous). For their part Appvv appears to have a heads up on the iPhone 4S.

Back to the rumour though! The iPhone 4 shipped with 512 MB of RAM so the uprated iPhone 4S having the same isn't exactly a great selling point, especially when many are wondering just how much of an upgrade the iPhone 4S really is. The initial presentation of the device left many wondering whether moving from the iPhone 4 was really worth it and if it turns out that it is all too similar to the iPhone 4 in yet another area then it might just be enough to hold some people in check when it comes time to reach for their credit card.

iPhone 4S Clocked at 800 MHz, Big GPU Improvement Over iPhone 4    [ 11-10-2011 14:52 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: AnandTech     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The iPhone 4S may not be officially on sale yet (pre-orders don't really count), but that hasn't stopped a few lucky souls who actually have one from putting it through its paces. AnandTech published some benchmark results, which, whilst not surprising, are nevertheless interesting. As you can see from the graphic below the 4S performs well in Javascript performance tests and holdsup well against the Tegra 2. In comparison to the iPhone 4 it is definitely a step up.

Geekbench results show a clock speed of around the 800 MHz mark. That's approximately 25% slower than the iPad 2 with its A5 chip, and that 800 Mhz number may disappoint some who like to see their clock speed followed by a G, but compared with the iPhone 4 it is does show a definite increase in performance and the iPhone 4 was no slouch in its day.

In terms of GPU performance the iPhone 4S gets placed ahead of the Galaxy S II for GLBenchmark 2.1 tests in 1280x720 off-screen render mode. The iPhone 4S scores 122.7 to the Galaxy S II's 67.1. The iPhone 4S is still behind the curve with respect to the iPad 2, but again outpaces the iPhone 4, which scored 15.3.

Sea Ray/N800 First Ads Appear    [ 11-10-2011 13:00 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket Now     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's first Windows Phone handset(s) is due to unlaeshed on the world any day now and by the looks of some recent advertising shots the first handset, Sea Ray, will be known as the N800. Yes I know there is already a Nokia handset called the N800, but a small matter like that wouldn't get in the way now would it? Even so the handset may in fact be branded under the name 'Lumia' in certain markets, but to be fair there are all sorts of potential names doing the rounds, but none save 'N800' has actually appeared on the ads yet.

Turning to the adverts they're actually quite interesting because they give us a little insight into how Nokia will be positioning its Windows Phone devices. There's a certain feeling of the handset being a handy little companion to your daily routine. Why is that so interesting? Well cast your mind back to the launch of Windows Phone when Microsoft was expousing the virtues of its new platform as a means to cut down on the amount of time you had to spend fiddling around with your phone. Is Nokia going to buck that trend and promote their devices as something to enter every nook and cranny of your life?

Microsoft's approach may not be all that enticing to many, if sales figures and market share are anything to go by anyway, so perhaps a different track by Nokia might find itself on firmer ground with potential switchers.
