Samsung Launches Counter-suit Against Apple    [ 20-09-2011 19:33 ]

It really is a war between Apple and Samsung and every day seems to bring another round in their ongoing struggle. Just yesterday we reported how Samsung are seeking to have the iPhone 5 banned in South Korea and today's latest is that Samsung have launched a counter lawsuit against Apple in Australia.

The latest suit concerns patent infringement with Samsung alledging that Apple has infringed upon seven of its patents relating to wirelesscommunication standards. The bad news for Apple here is that the claim takes in just about every portable Apple device with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 all being included in the suit. Samsung are also throwing in a claim that Apple's claims about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are invalid and have asked for the Australian courts to overturn earlier decisions rendered on that device.

It's an increasingly bitter dispute, but Apple looks to have picked on an opponent who won't back down or compromise, at least not yet. Samsung has shown a willingness to fight Apple every step of the way and seems to be taking to heart Eric Schmidt's claims that Android's competitors can't outdo the OS so they resort to legal attacks. If that is what Apple is doing then Samsung isn't going to be pushed over quickly.

Samsung Opening Bada To Other Manufacturers    [ 20-09-2011 18:52 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WSJ     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung is looking to expand on its Bada OS by opening it up to other manufacturers and devs in 2012 to try and wean itself of its Android reliance according to the Wall Street Journal. Samsung is even hoping to see its OS used in other non-phone devices, such as televisions. At the moment Bada controls around 1.9% of the market according to Gartner figures, which is pretty small change in the grand scheme of things.

Niel Mawston of Strategy Analytics told the WSJ that "For Samsung to be successful with opening bada it will need to be launched in the United States market, because that is where the most powerful developers and consumers are found". That statement does hold some truth, certainly as far as developers go, but in terms of consumers Samsung has a much bigger market in both Asia and Europe to work with, especially if it sees other manufacturers producing some low cost Bada devices for the vast Chinese market.

Google+ Goes Public, 100 New Improvements    [ 20-09-2011 18:38 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Google     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google+ has moved beyond its beta stage and is now open to all and sundry. As part of that process Google have unveiled some new features they are implementing in the full version of Google+. Some of the more newsworthy changes include the Hangouts video feature being made available to Android smartphones running at least Gingerbread 2.3. There are others too of course, such as:

  • Hangouts on Air - allows for a live broadcast to as many as nine people
  • Hangouts can be named
  • Hangouts has gained screen sharing functionality
  • Hangout users will be able to share and view a sketchpad
  • Hangout users can share and view Google Docs
  • Google+ users can search for other users from Google+ itself with Google providing results from around the internet
  • Devs will get their hands on the Hangouts API
