Ex Google Exec: Larry Page Ruined The Comapny    [ 14-03-2012 18:30 ]

Google's former Engineering Director James Whittaker has been dishing some dirt on his former employer from the safety of his new role as Partner Development Manager at Microsoft. Writing on MSDN blogs Whittaker explained his reason for leaving Google, and it can be summed up as Larry Page, one of the company's founders, having ruined the company. So says Whittaker anyway.

It all boils down to a shift in values according to Whittaker. Under Schmidt Google was apparently content to view advertising as a means to an end. That end was coming up with innovative ideas and projects. Once Page took the helm Whittaker says that this changed and Google's products became the focus for Google to be able to collect as much data about its customers as it could.

Under Eric Schmidt ads were always in the background. Google was run like an innovation factory, empowering employees to be entrepreneurial through founder's awards, peer bonuses and 20% time. Our advertising revenue gave us the headroom to think, innovate and create. But that was then, as the saying goes, and this is now.

So why the change under Page? Well it comes back to Facebook says Whittaker. Page was apparently ticked off with Facebook and its ability to collect large amounts of user data. Google wanted a slice of that pie and that led to such stellar successes as Google Wave and Buzz. Whittaker asserts that Page was directly involved in this transformation and that the drive to incorporate social networking into Google's products became overwhelming. Whittaker sums up his feelings on this change of strategy very simply:

The old Google was a great place to work. The new one?
