Review LG G5500

LG G5500, live pictures

Standard kit:

  • Phone
  • Battery charger
  • Strap
  • Portable handsfree
  • User's guide

With every new model LG continues experiments with design, thus LG G5500 utilizes slider idea. Such devices are popular in Korea, but are practically unknown in Europe. The same opening design have some latest European models: Nokia 7650 and Siemens SL55. Such models are worth appearing in the near future, as they become interesting fashion solution. Against the background of adaptation to clamshells and their waste of fashion constituent, the choice of slider phone is evident for fashion consumers.

LG G5500 is rather small by dimensions (92x44x21 mm) and it is easily located in pockets. The weight is typical for such phones – 80 gr. The main reason of the external aerial presence is height’s diminution.

If to look at the device closely, you will be amazed by phones’ screen, which is sunk into the case. In fact, the screen is big. You can make sure of that if to pull down the keyboard. Having slide down it will show the whole screen. The resolution makes 128x160 pixels, that allows displaying up to 6 text lines and up to two service lines. The screen displays up to 65K colors, the phones is equipped with UFB-matrix. In this case, the screen doesn’t fade in the sun completely, but in the bright light the information fades practically completely. The apparent contradiction is explained by the fact that in the closed state the screen is visible rather well, because it is sunk in the case. Simple developer decision allows working with the screen in the street.

The slider of this model deserves commendation. It has practically no backlash; all is within standard. The strength of the case is achieved at the expense of using metal in the construction of the guides. It results the device is partially prevented from drops, plus, theoretically, it is prevented form the appearance of strong backlash during active using.

There’s strap holder and also headset connector (included in the standard kit) on the left lateral surface. Here’s also volume key. Infrared port is located on the right lateral surface. Analogously to the latest phones from LG, this one supports any data transferring thru the IrDA. You can send calling card, ring tone or picture (last two functions will be available in further firmware versions).

The interface connector is standard, it locates on the bottom butt-end.

Some word about the keyboard. It is made of plastic, the alphanumerical keys are grouped vertically. The keyboard is average by comfort. The navigation key is comfortable and it has built-in OK key. The backlight is of blue color and it lights uniformly. The brightness is average; in case of big font size, that is positive factor.

This model is equipped with lithium-ionic battery and its capacity makes 760 mAh. According to the manufacturer it is capable to provide up to 200 standby hours and up to 2 hours of talk time. In reality the device operated about 3 days in case of 25 minutes of talking and up to 10 minutes of using other functions. Time of full recharging makes about 1.5 hour.

Menu

By the features LG G5500 is the exact copy of LG G5400. Using the navigation key in standby mode you can change profiles or you can call the most frequently used menu items. The main menu is organized as vertical items set and the submenus are realized as lists. The phone supports shortcut number navigation.

Phonebook.Up to 200 entries can be saved in the phone memory. Up to 5 fields (4 phone numbers, one e-mail address) can be added to one entry, also you can select a caller group and an icon (pre-installed pictures, for example, faces of people, animals and so on). A selected picture and a name will be displayed while incoming call.

When you input your information you should select a main phone number and then add other phone number types. You can miss some of them. Phone numbers from both SIM-card memory and phone memory can be displayed in the list.

Totally there are 7 caller groups in the phone. You can assign special ringing tone, color of backlighting and picture to each group (the other pictures set is used).

Up to 10 voice tags can be added to phone numbers in the phonebook. Voice recognition works correctly. If you try to record the same tags, the phone warns you about it.

Messages. The phone supports EMS standard, what allows to send pictures, melodies, format text and send concatenated messages (up to 980 characters). The other difference is that the phone has T9 as a predictive text input, not eZi Text. Several vocabularies for several languages are available. There are up to 11 changeable templates.

A new feature – MMS messages support is also appeared in this phone. It is possible to format several pages and attach several pictures simultaneously.

All messages are saved in the phone memory, first SIM-card memory is filled, then phone memory is used. On the whole, it is comfortable to work with these messages.

Call lists. One can view standard lists of missed, dialed and received calls. Each list unites 10 phone numbers, date and time is indicated for certain records. Equal phone numbers are summarized, they are not placed in order.

It’s pleasant that there is a combined list of 20 last records in the phone, it is displayed when you press a send key in the standby mode.

Profiles. You can adjust sound settings in the phone, for example, melody type, keypad tone and so on. Everything is traditional

Settings. Phone settings, for example, display settings and sound settings are placed here. There are 5 alarm-clocks in the phone, each one can alert once, daily or weekly. Any user will be satisfied with these alarm-clocks.

Organizer. Up to 20 events can be saved in the memory of organizer. Date, time and reminder can be set for each of them. You also indicate whether you like these events to be repeated (every day, week, month, year). The calendar shows a month, dates with events are indicated by a color. A special symbol, which symbolizes type of event (meeting, reminder) is appeared in the end. The main shortcoming of this organizer is limited number of records.

Fun&Tools.First, few words about games. There are three pre-installed Java games in the phone. They are not removable, but as for me, it is not necessary. Multiply is a kind of tetrix, space ball is an interesting version of snake, your mission is to swallow balls in special order not to allow snake to grow, in size. The last game is Submarine; it is a submarine simulator, your mission is to overcome all obstacles in the sea.

In My Folder you can store your own melodies and pictures. One can set them as ringtones or wallpapers. All downloaded files, except applications are kept here.

Musical editor allows to create up to 10 polyphonic melodies, depending on your taste.

Unit converter is quite convenient, the same is calculator concerned.

Besides, you can view world time for selected cities.

All voice records are stored here too, you can rename, play back and delete them. All capabilities are standard.

Internet. The phone supports GPRS (class 10), so, we recommend you to set wap over GPRS, it’s cheaper. The phone supports wap-brower in version 1.2.1.

Java. The total memory amount makes 350Kb. It is allocated dynamically. One application can’t exceed 60 Kb, otherwise, it won’t run. We can’t test work of Java, as applications for LG do not exist today. LG G5400 is a first phone, which supports this function

Impressions

The device has no problems with reception quality. The loudness of 40-chords poly ringer is enough to hear the device in room or in street. The vibration alert is average by force. The sound in speaker is painted in warm tones, it’s soft. Overall, the phone is practically the full analogue of LG G5400 and differs from it only by case design and by improved IrDA features. The given model should be taken up from the position of design and only then from the position of functionality.

If its price makes about 300$ the device will become curious gain from the position of design. Such devices will appear in great amounts by the next spring only. In November LG G5500 will present in solitude (Siemens SL55 is other class product, but has the same construction). If you like the design of this phone and its slider features than you have no alternative (especially for men). If you interested in functionality and the form-factor doesn’t play a role you can choose other analogue solution. Overall, this device will become a well-taken purchase if its price makes about 265-275$.
