IFA 2011. Acer, A New WP7 Smartphone, Acer Ferrari and Acer “Air”

At IFA 2011 in Berlin Acer occupied almost half of an entire hall reaching the surface coverage of such giants as LG, Dell, Sony and Vodafone (Samsung simply took an entire whole). Here the company presented a few new devices and a bunch of currently produced items but most of the showcase remained empty – regular practice for IFA.

Acer W4

This is the company’s first Windows Phone 7 smartphone – the “W” must stand for WP7. This phone was announced in summer at Computex but here at IFA it was available to play with. The phone was presented in two colors but by the time of the release there might be more – Acer has been releasing inexpensive phones in many colors recently and W4 should be one of them.

  • Body: Plastic
  • OS: Windows Phone 7
  • Platform: 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255
  • System Memory: N/A
  • Storage: 8 GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (b/g/n/), Bluetooth 2.1 (A2DP), microUSB (USB 2.0) charging/syncing,  3.5 mm headset jack, DLNA
  • Display: capacitive, 800x480 (WVGA)TFT 3,6” with automatic brightness adjustment
  • Camera: 5 MPix AF
  • Navigation: GPS
  • Battery: 1300 mAh
  • Size: 116 X 59 X 12 mm / 4.6 X 2.3 X 0.5 in

The phone should be released by the end of the year, the price is yet unknown. If we take into account the price for HTC Mozart that has similar specs than Acer will most likely go with the price tag of around $300-400, otherwise the phone will be stuck on shelves. Also, if HTC Radar costs less than $500 it will become a rival for Acer W4.

I cannot add anything about W4 – it is a regular WP7 smartphone with a plastic body and it looks a lot like any other WP7 phone but the build materials are worse than those used in HTC WP7 phones.

Acer liquidmini Ferrari Edition

Acer has an inexpensive Android phone called liquid mini. Here is its review.

Review of Acer Liquid mini (E310)

So Acer thought why not make a Ferrari labeled version of this cute little phone and then ask a lot more cash for it? I find this sad. I understand Acer when it comes to their Ferrari laptops and Acer Liquid Ferrari which had a rather impressive performance at the time being and the Ferrari logo went well with it. But stitching the logo of Ferrari, one of the most luxurious brands in the world, to a mid-range phone?

I have nothing else to say. I think a mid-range Acer Ferrari depreciates the value of all the other Ferrari products the company has produced and they will no longer be able to charge outrageous sums for the Ferrari name.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 /A101

Acer had all their tablets at the show but the most interesting is the cheapest of them – the 7” 1024x600 tablet based on NVidia Tegra 2 with a dual core 1GHz processor running Android 3.0. it has a 5MPix rear cam camera and a 2MPix one in the front., 8GB storage, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The more expensive version also has a SIM slot. Tab A100 seems to me like a regular Android 3.0 NVidia Tegra 2 tablet – I cannot note any serious disadvantages or advantages. If the price is low enough it will attractive as an ebook or a media player. If the price is too high it will be just another unassuming tablet.

Acer Macbook Air S3

While Apple is getting deep into the tablet and phone litigations with Samsung other manufacturers are having fun on the ultra-compact laptop market.

Acer presents S3-951. It features Intel Core i3 latest generation CPU, an SSD drive, and a 13.3” 1366x768 HD LED display. It weighs 1.4 Kg/3 lb., its minimum thickness is 13mm/0.5in. The battery is quoted to last 6 hours at average workload (God knows what this is).

If the price is right I am sure this laptop will find its buyer and there is nothing wrong with the fact that it tries to look like Macbook Air but quite contrary. Firstly, it is still not a copycat, and, secondly, Acer is moving in the right direction in terms of design – S3 look really nice.

And a bit more…

I accidentally bumped into a black Acer Iconia Smart – it looks terrific in real life. The only thing left for Acer is to finally release it.
