Acer at MWC 2011: Smartphones, Tablets and Laptops

In this article I will touch upon all new models from Acer without many details and particular specifications.

Smartphones: Acer Liquid mini and beTouch E210

Both smartphones were announced at CES, but not everybody is aware of that. The first model - Acer Liquid mini is an accessible candybar smartphone. A 3.2" capacitive touchscreen of HVGA resolution is accompanied by a 5 MP camera with autofocus, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which is pretty standard nowadays. The phone works on Android 2.2 with Qualcomm MSM7227 platform and a processor of 600 MHz.

You should be able to purchase the phone in March for around $375. The details are still preliminary. The smartphone is offered in several colors and has neat design. The handset is made of plastic as it is an accessible phone.

The smartphone beTouch 210 will be positioned as a business device. You know every manufacturer believes that a QWERTY device must target the business audience. The phone is really nice with a convenient keypad and large buttons.

Tablets: Acer ICONIA TAB A100, A500, W500

Acer decided to provide tablets for all purposes: inexpensive, compact and huge. You can pick any you like. On the outside tablets differ by their size, while under the hood we get Android 2.3. I would mention the specs and add brief comments.

Acer ICONIA TAB A100

  • OS: Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)
  • Platform: nVidia Tegra 250 Dual cortex A9, 1 GHz
  • Memory: 512 MB of DDR2 (RAM) and 8 GB for data storage + microSD
  • Networks: optional 3G Module “Huawei EM770W” (UMTS /WCDMA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE)
  • Screen: a resistive 7” LCM touchscreen with WSVGA (1024x600) resolution
  • Camera: 5 MP with autofocus and flash; 2 MP frontal camera
  • Interfaces: Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, MicroUSB, HDMI, 3.5 mm
  • Battery: 1530 mAh offers 5 hours of video playback (720P H.264)
  • Dimensions: 195 x 117 x 13.1 mm

This small tablet of $470 will hit the shelves in summer, but its main feature is Android 3.0.

Acer ICONIA TAB A500

  • OS: Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)
  • Platform: nVidia Tegra 250 Dual cortex A9, 1 GHz
  • Memory: 1GB of DDR2 (RAM), 16/32 GB for data storage + microSD
  • Networks: optional 3G Module “Huawei EM770W” (UMTS /WCDMA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE)
  • Screen: a resistive 10.1” LCM touchscreen with WXGA LCM (1280x800) resolution
  • Camera: 5 MP with autofocus and flash; 2 MP frontal camera
  • Interfaces: Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, MicroUSB, USBHost, HDMI, 3,5 mm
  • Battery: 3260 mAh
  • Dimensions: 260 x 177 x 13.3 mm

This model is an analogue of A100 with a bigger screen offering higher resolution. Some specs were boosted as well. In particular, the amount of memory was increased and now we have a USBHost option to connect storage devices or a mouse. The model will appear in April for the price of $680.

Acer ICONIA TAB W500

This tablet uses Windows 7 and is built on AMD C-50 (1GHz, DDR3 1066 MHz) platform with the graphic module (AMD Radeon HD6250), 32 GB SSD storage and a 10.1" screen of 1280x800 resolution.

Offered together with a high quality keypad, the tablet can be transformed into a powerful laptop (if you insert it into the keypad).

Acer also showed a laptop with two screens, but I cannot provide any comments yet. Enjoy the photos.

The main device from Acer is an Android smartphone ICONICA Smart, which will be covered in a separate article.
