Accessible LG Optimus Models at MWC 2011

While we were discussing flagship models and their useful features we ignored less spectacular "robots". It's an open secret that LG got a name for its Optimus range courtesy of accessible smartphones, so we have to give dues to similar models. One handset was unveiled in January with another to follow at MWC 2011. In Barcelona we had a chance to test both of them.

LG Optimus Me

It is a compact (slightly bigger than SE X10 mini) smartphone on Android 2.2. It fits a hand well because of smooth edges. Available colors are black, silver, red, pink and blue.

The dominant material is matte plastic with a battery cover using silver stain finish. The smartphone boasts hardware buttons to start and end calls, which makes me extremely happy. Judging by the specs LG Optimus me is a typical budget model:

  • Class: smartphone
  • Form factor: candybar
  • Body materials: plastic
  • OS: Android 2.2
  • Networks: GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA
  • Interfaces: Wi-Fi (b/g/n/), Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB and 3.5 mm jacks
  • Screen: a 2.8" TFT touchscreen with 240x320 (QVGA) resolution
  • Camera: 3 MP with autofocus
  • Navigation: GPS/AGPS
  • Battery: 1500 mAh
  • Dimensions: 108 x 57.5 x 12.2 mm
  • Weight: 108 g.

The key disadvantage is a QVGA screen. I wanted to see at least HVGA in a smartphone, albeit in a budget one. There is nothing else to complain about (camera has no focus, if I am not mistaken) and the price tag of Optimus Me is likely to be the lowest among the range.

LG Optimus Chat

The second smartphone was unveiled at MWC 2011. It is a QWERTY slider aimed at young people with its smooth edges, many color variants and funny looking buttons.

Similarly to Optimus Me we get hardware buttons to start and end calls. The keypad has four rows and oval buttons, which offer convenient text input according to first impressions due to large gaps between them.

The model has features similar to those of Optimus me except dimensions and a QWERTY keypad. Sadly, we get a QVGA screen here as well.

Taking into account a smart pricing policy of LG both models will be among the most accessible "robots" to go on sale this spring.
