LG: Our Tablet Won't Be A 'Large Smartphone'    [ 14-09-2010 20:01 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It seems to be a day for tech companies to take shots at the competition, not only have Nokia been putting down Google Maps, but LG have been having a dig at Samsung. It all centres around Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet device and LG's own plans to enter the tablet market. LG dismissed the Galaxy Tab in saying that they "... don't just want to release a large smartphone - we want to release the best in market." LG's head of mobiles, Scott Ahn, added "... we are confident that we will provide the best tablet of its kind when we are ready."

It's great to see LG taking a strong line with their own tablet, but of course talking it up too much can be counter-productive if it doesn't live up to all that hype. In the past LG have said their tablet would be 'surprisingly productive' and 'better' than the iPad. Let's just hope they aren't using up their energy talking rather than building.

Nokia: We're Better Than Google At Maps    [ 14-09-2010 19:50 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia have been talking up their in-house Ovi Maps platform, and consequently talking down Google Maps in the process. Niklas Savander, vice president of markets at Nokia, made the claim that Ovi Maps is in fact better than Google Maps and its all due to features such as the side-loading of map data rather than 3G streaming and pedestrian navigation as well as Underground route advice.

"Nokia, not Google, is the leader in mobile navigation. We lead the market in terms of functionality and reach. Ovi Maps, unlike Google, offers pedestrian navigation, as well as the best line to take on the Underground, plus on Ovi Maps you don't need to be connected. Thanks to this, Ovi Maps is far less data hungry than Google's service, because we're optimised for mobile use."

All very well and good, but the claims don't completely stack up, for one thing Google does actually have pedestrian directions for Google Maps on Android handsets. At any rate it's certainly fighting words from Nokia and they're playing to win, summing up their attitude Savander said "This is a space we intend to own."

Video: Samsung i8700    [ 14-09-2010 19:45 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WapCamer via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With Windows Phone 7 almost upon us the leaked pictures and videos have been steadily popping up on the web. Enter the i8700 in its leaked video debut. Sure there have been pictures of it before now and of course some healthy chatter on the specifications, most of which could be guessed at from Microsoft's own minimum standards for Win Phone 7 devices, however, this is the first time, we believe, that the handset has appeared on video. Enjoy!

33% Android Users Click On Ads, Blackberry Users Least Likely    [ 14-09-2010 18:57 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Mobile advertising is still in its infancy in many ways and it's still a struggle to get cnsumers clicking on ads through their mobile. However, Android seems to be leading the pack when it comes to people clicking on ads with a rather astonishing 33% of users having clicked on an ad according to Nielsen. To put that figure into context Windows Mobile came second with 29%, the iPhone third with 26% and Blackberry trailed in last place with just 15%. That will certainly make interesting reading for Steve Jobs who has been pushing Apple's new mobile ad platform of late.

The Nielsen figures also reveal that Android users, along with Blackberry users, had around 3.5 free apps installed on their device for every paid app. iPhone users, in contrast, had a lower ratio of 2:1 free to paid apps. Blackberry users were found to be the least likely to upgrade to a paid version of a free app.

Of course Windows Mobile is going the way of the dinosaurs and Windows Phone 7 is shortly to make its official debut so it is arguably most interesting to see how Microsoft fares going forward. Will they be able to maintain that 20% ad click through rate on Win Phone 7? It would certainly help to launch their nascent platform with devs if they could.
