Easy SMS Brings Text Messaging To The Illiterate    [ 21-06-2011 16:35 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Textually     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Texting is undoutedly one of the most popular applications available to mobile phone users and it's probably one of the features we most take for granted. Spare a thought though for the hundreds of millions of people around the world who cannot read or write. A text message isn't going to be much use to them now is it?

Enter the 'Easy SMS' concept. It's an app for Windows Phone, which lets those who can't read or write use SMS. To do this it employees text to speech so that incoming messages are read out and pictograms to compose messages instead of words. Take a look at the video below to get an idea of what the whole thing is about and you can click here to learn more about it.

Nokia's Long Term R&D Intentions    [ 21-06-2011 16:19 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: http://www.winrumors.com/     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Eldar has just tweeted this rather interesting picture showing Nokia's future intentions with regards its R&D investment. An important point to note here is that the graphic doesn't represent actual money, rather it would seem to represent ratios.

Looking at the 2010 investment and comparing it with the long term intention two things immediately jump out at you. The first is that the overall R&D investment shrinks and the second is that Symbian disappears, being replaced by Windows Phone. Interestingly both Windows Phone and Services show a reduced level of investment moving forward when compared with Symbian and current levels respectively. MeeGo also shrinks quite significantly. What does rise though is the share of R&D investment allocated to Mobile Phone platforms.

The reduction is the share to Services shouldn't really be surprising given the tie up with Microsoft. Simply put there will be overlap between Nokia and Microsoft in terms of the sort of services they offer. Windows Phone's share of the R&D investment is significantly smaller than the overall share Symbian enjoyed, but again this shouldn't be too surprising given that Nokia will be limited in terms of what it can actually do to Windows Phone. Sure Microsoft are allowing a certain amount of customisation, but there is a limit and Nokia will have to 'toe the party line' in some areas.

Nokia Announces The N9    [ 21-06-2011 09:23 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Nokia     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Hot on the heels of the developer bound N950 Nokia have announced the N9. The handset sports a 3.9 inch screen (compared with the 4 inch screen of the N9500 and an 8 MP camera with either 16 GB or 64 GB of internal storage to back it up. The OS is of course MeeGo, version 1.2 to be exact. Pricing? Availability? No details were released, but as you may recall Eldar hasn't been optimistic on the N9 reaching a wide audience.

The Nokia N9: a unique all-screen smartphone

Published June 21, 2011

Singapore – Nokia today announced the Nokia N9, built for people who appreciate a stunning blend of design and the latest smartphone technology. To learn more about the design of the Nokia N9 visit: http://swipe.nokia.com

One swipe and you’re home The Nokia N9 introduces an innovative new design where the home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe. Whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home.

The three home views of the user interface are designed to give fast access to the most important things people do with a phone: using apps, staying up to date with notifications and social networks, and switching between activities.

The industrial design of the Nokia N9 is an example of extreme product making and craft. The body is precision-machined from a single piece of polycarbonate and flows seamlessly into beautiful curved glass. The laminated deep black display means that the user interface just floats on the surface of the product.

The Nokia N9 also packs the latest in camera, navigation and audio technology for a great all-round experience.

“With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone. To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel,” said Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of Design. “And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve in future Nokia products.”

Innovative all-screen design With no need for a home key, the all-screen Nokia N9 makes more room for apps to shine. The 3.9-inch AMOLED screen is made from scratch-resistant curved glass. The polycarbonate body enables superior antenna performance. This means better reception, better voice quality and fewer dropped calls.

Camera, maps and multimedia The 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor, wide-angle lens, HD-quality video capture and large lens aperture enable great camera performance even in lowlighting conditions. This makes the Nokia N9 one of the best camera-phones ever produced.

The Nokia N9 features free turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps. With the new dedicated Drive app, you can get in your car and start navigating to your destination right away.

You can watch videos in true 16:9 widescreen format. And because the Nokia N9 is also the world’s first smartphone with Dolby® Digital Plus decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology, you get a surround sound experience with any set of headphones.

Touch just got better Fitted with the latest in wireless technology, Near Field Communication (NFC), the Nokia N9 allows you to easily share images and videos between devices by touching them together. Pair it with Bluetooth accessories like the new NFC-enabled Nokia Play 360° wireless music speaker only once, and you get a great surround sound music experience with just a tap.

Colors and Memory The Nokia N9 will be available in three colors – black, cyan, and magenta with storage options to accommodate plenty of content: 16GB and 64GB. The Nokia N9 is scheduled to be in stores later this year, with availability and local pricing to be announced closer to the sales start.

Nokia N950 Gets Official    [ 21-06-2011 09:02 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: via Engadget & The Nokia Blog     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

This will probably be the biggest mobile tech story of the day ... the Noki N950 is finally official! Before we get into the specifics let's take a gander at the device thanks to a screengrab from Engadget:

The first thing that needs to be said is that this handset is not for sale. Yes that's correct, it is not for you to buy. Instead it will be available through certain developer channels. The release notes give us an idea of what the handset is all about and there are differences between it and the N9:

  • N950 is physically larger and is made out of aluminum, whereas N9 has a polycarbonate unibody.
  • N950 has a physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The N9 is a touchscreen-only device.
  • N950 has a 4-inch TFT LCD display whereas N9 has 3.9-inch AMOLED display.
  • Display resolution is same on both devices (854×480).
  • N950 has a different physical camera module than N9. Both camera modules have very similar image quality (Carl Zeiss branding in N9) and both modules support 8Mpix image mode.
  • In the N950 the front facing camera is in top right corner and on N9 it is in the bottom right corner. The actual camera module is same.
  • N950 supports Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR, whereas N9 supports version 4.0 N950 does not have support for NFC
  • N950 has 1320mAh battery, the N9 has 1450mAh battery

I know many will probably call me biased or anti-Nokia, but really I'm not so take the following as an objective assessment. Personally it's hard for me to be excited by this device as some today seem to be. Why? Well simply put one has to ask how much the N950 really matters? After all Nokia has all but abandoned MeeGo so to be blunt I have to wonder where this device, and MeeGo in general, is going to go. It's an interesting 'curiosity', but that's about all it is.
