Video: Android Apps Coming To iOS    [ 31-05-2011 19:31 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: in-the-box     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

iOS users could soon be able to get their hands on Android apps without the need to jailbreak their iPhones (or the need to use an Android device!).The wonder occurs through a project called 'in-the-box', which aims give devs an easymeans of submitting apps to the App Store.

The Dalvik virtual machine (as well as Gingerbread APIs) are being ported to iOS and devs include it within their app. You can see a demonstration of this in the video below with a Java based app called 'Hello world'. It's a tad on the 'rustic' side if we can call it that since the output is through a console, but as a proof of concept it shows that it can be done.

Android Leads U.S. Data Usage    [ 31-05-2011 19:24 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nielsen     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nielsen's figures on the state of the U.S. smartphone market are showing Android in the lead with a 36% share, nothing new there, but interestingly Nielsen are saying that Android have held this position for three months straight with little change. The obvious implication being that Android's rapid growth rate has finally levelled off.

That's a somewhat dangerous claim to make of course, not only for the fact that the U.S. doesn't exist in a vacuum, but also for the fact that extending the time period just beyond three months continues to show growth. Between November and January Android grew from 29% of the market to 36%.

The figures also shed some light on data usage by platform and again Android leads the way. Android users, on average, used 582 MB of data each per month. Next were iOS users with an average of 492 MB per month. This is actually a very interesting disparity because the figures show that the majority of this data usage is in downloading apps. Apple still have the larger app store in terms of the volume of apps available and yet Android users are using almost 100 MB more of data each mont than iOS users.

BlackBerry users were last in terms of data usage consuming just 127 MB each on average. Of course that should be taken within the context of RIM compressing data, but it is still a long way behind the two frontrunners.

Nokia Stock Dips On Lowered Guidance    [ 31-05-2011 19:18 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's share price has been taking a battering today, falling as much as 12%, as the company announced that it was revising its Q2 and full year guidance. What that means in plain English is that Nokia are now saying that net sales of its products will probbaly be 'substantially below' the previously projected level of 6.1 billion - 6.6 billion euros. Operating margin forecasts have also been revised with Nokia saying the previous estimate of between 6% and 9% is no longer valid and that the expected operating margin will be well below those levels.

None of this is a surprise of course for any one who has been following the company's progress lately. Symbian, long Nokia's main mobile platform, has been effectively killed off, despite Nokia's assurances that it will continue to support the platform for years to come. The problem there of course is that once customers hear that active development on the platform is to stop and that a different platform will become Nokia's main focus they understandably loose interest in Symbian. That translate sinto fewer devices being sold.

On the bright side though Nokia are saying that their first Windows Phone device will start shipping in the last quarter of this year. Let's hope it can turn things around for them.

Apple Unveiling iCloud Monday 6th June    [ 31-05-2011 18:37 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Apple     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

This year's WWDC has been said to focus more on software than hardware and in keeping with that theme Apple have confimed that it will be making an announcement about an 'upcoming cloud services offering". In other words they will be announcing iCloud, their new cloud based music service, on Monday 6th June.

Traditionally WWDC has seen the announcement of the next generation iPhone, but that tradition is expected to be broken this year as the event will, as mentioned above, be concerned more with software. Alongside the iCloud announcement there is also expected to be an unveiling of iOS 5, the next iteration of Apple's mobile platform.

One strange aspect to all of this though is that there is any mention of what will be happening at WWDC at all. Apple aren't exactly known for their loose lipped approach to new products and services so either this marks a whole new approach for them or they have something else waiting in the wings ...
