U.S. Market Figures: Google Solidifies Lead, RIM Heading Towards Oblivion    [ 06-10-2011 18:44 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: comScore     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

comScore have released new figures for the U.S. mobile market and once again Android is surging ahead and once again RIM is sliding towards onscurity. Let's just get straight into the numbers though and see what I mean.

Considering the overall market Samsung is once more in the number one position with a 25.3% share or in other words it controls a qaurter of the U.S. mobile phone market. That figure represents a 0.5% increase from May by the way, so whilst not a major leap it is is at least holding steady for Samsung. Their home turf rival LG is also their main rival in America as LG is in second place with 21% of the market. That's actually a drop of 0.1% from May for LG so again no major change and they are holding steady. The same can't be said for Motorola though, which saw a 1.1% decline to bring their marketshare down to 14%. Apple on the other hand saw some gains, from 8.7% to 9.8%.

Lastly, and I do use the term advisedly, we come to RIM. They saw a drop of 1% to just 7.1% marketshare. Now that may not look too bad, after all Apple is barely ahead of them, but let's now turn to the smartphone category and see what's happening there ...

RIM's fortunes were even worse when we look at smartphones specifically. Their share of the smartphone market is 19.7%, which whilst appearing healthy on the face of it actually represents a whopping 5% drop over just three months.

If the picture isn't looking too bright for RIM it certainly is for Android, which holds a 43.7% share of the American smartphone landscape. That's a 5.6% rise over three months or put another way Google gained more than RIM lost over the same period. Coincidence?

Apple again showed growth, rising from 26.6% to 27.3% to take second place in the smartphone stakes. With the iPhone 4S less than a week from launch that figure will probably get a boost the next time we look at these figures.

Windows Phone and Symbian are barely worth mentioning to be honest with their 5.7% and 1.8% market shares respectively. Of course Nokia is yet to launch its Windows Phone devices so that could give that platform a boost depending upon how they are received.

New Nokia Sun Rising?    [ 06-10-2011 18:25 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Mon Windows Phone     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia still haven't released a Windows Phone smartphone yet, but that hasn't stopped them from becoming the most talked about Windows Phone manufacturer. With devices like Searay and Sabre being bandied around water coolers there's a good deal of speculation over what Nokia might be releasing. Added to that list is Sun, another device that has appeared on a product listing from Orange France. There are some specs to go with the name too. We're looking at an AMOLED screen, 8 MP camera, polycarbonate shell and there is also the possibility of a micro-SIM slot.

Google Pays Tribute To Steve Jobs    [ 06-10-2011 06:57 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google have altered their search page in a tribute to Steve Jobs, who died earlier today at the age of 56. It's an unusual move, and one that shows the respect Steve Jobs commanded, as Google rarely changes its famously spartan search page to include anything other than the Google logo, the search box and the search buttons. The tribute also links to Apple.com, again another highly unusual move for Google to link to a non-Google website from what is arguably the most famous and sought after web real-estate on the internet.

The tribute simply reads:

Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011

Reactions To The Death Of Steve Jobs    [ 06-10-2011 06:16 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: BBC, ThisIsMyNext, AllThningsD, et al     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

As news of the death of Steve Jobs has spread around the world reactions have begun pouring in. Below we present a selection of tributes to Jobs.

Barack Obama, President of the United States of America:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him
.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.

Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia:

All of us would be touched every day by products that he was the creative genius behind, so this is very sad news and my condolences go to his family and friends.

Bill Gates, Co-Founder of Microsoft:

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

Paul Allen, Co-Founder of Microsoft:

My condolences to Steve Jobs family and friends. We’ve lost a unique tech pioneer and auteur who knew how to make amazingly great products.

Sergey Brin, Co-Founder of Google:

From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry and I sought inspiration for vision and leadership, we needed to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). And I have witnessed it in person the few times we have met.

On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues at Apple.

Larry Page, Co-Founder of Google:

I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family.

Eric Schmidt, Chairman of Google:

Steve Jobs is the most successful CEO in the U.S. of the last 25 years. He uniquely combined an artists touch and an engineers vision to build an extraordinary company… one of the greatest American leaders in history.

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft:

I want to express my deepest condolences at the passing of Steve Jobs, one of the founders of our industry and a true visionary. My heart goes out to his family, everyone at Apple and everyone who has been touched by his work.

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York:

Tonight, America lost a genius who will be remembered with Edison and Einstein, and whose ideas will shape the world for generations to come. Again and again over the last four decades, Steve Jobs saw the future and brought it to life long before most people could even see the horizon. And Steve’s passionate belief in the power of technology to transform the way we live brought us more than smart phones and iPads: it brought knowledge and power that is reshaping the face of civilization. In New York City’s government, everyone from street construction inspectors to NYPD detectives have harnessed Apple’s products to do their jobs more efficiently and intuitively. Tonight our City – a city that has always had such respect and admiration for creative genius – joins with people around the planet in remembering a great man and keeping Laurene and the rest of the Jobs family in our thoughts and prayers.
