Communicator HP iPaq hw6500 – live pictures and final specs

Official photos of HP iPaq hw6500>>>

Thanks to our friendly Holland resource nieuwemobiel.nl now we can acquaint our readers with live pictures of the device and its official specifications (still not published on official company site). The model is notable for small size, integrated QWERTY-keypad, integrated GPS module and two expansion slots.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) declassified the information about the device last week-end. All the documents including a manual (dated December 2004) are free to download following this link.

Official specs and satellite information (first published):

Actually the model is a monoblock with an integrated QWETRY-keypad placed under the screen. It resembles Palm models of the Treo line, though the concept is the same there is no direct copying. Due to the squareness of the screen (the resolution is 240x240 pixels, 3” in diagonal) the height of the device decreased. It’s not as significant as, for instance, in the BenQ P50’s case (the construction is similar but the screen is full-sized of 320x240 pixels).

This decrease of the screen size is really a compromise between the dimensions and a desire to integrate a full-size keypad. When answering an e-mail, ICQ message or typing an SMS you won’t notice any difference since a virtual keypad is replaced with a hardware one. However new screen resolution brings potential problems with software compatibility, especially concerning games.

The model will be shipped in two versions – one equipped with a 1.3 MP camera (HP iPaq hw6515) and another one without a camera (HP iPaq hw6510). The first model comes equipped with a mirror for self-shooting and a flash.

Several words about the specs of the model. The CPU is Intel XScale PXA270 312 MHz. The clock rate is more than enough for the tasks the device is intended for. But if someone finds that low, you probably remember the processor is accelerated up to 520 MHz with no special effort. About 44 MB of RAM are available of 64 MB provided and about 12 MB of flash memory are available of 64 MB. The main battery is capacious of 1200 mAh and an extra one expanded up to 1800 mAh is also available. Another one peculiarity is EDGE and quadruple GSM band support. Bluetooth version is 1.2 (a stack from Broadcom).

A unique peculiarity of the device is the presence of two expansion slots – SD and miniSD. That is the first communicator with such slot combination.

Looking at the photo we can notice a standard iPaq synchronization slot of the last version and a standard headset connector – 2.5 mm.

The stylus is actually the same as in the whole new HP iPaq line (a solid black plastic).

The model is expected for sale in the end of April. And in conclusion we’ll provide some more photos of the device:
