ABI Research, a market research form funnily enough, is laying down a forecast that 2012 will see Windows Phone account for just 2% of all mobile app downloads. That's depite a renewed push from Microsoft to bolster their platform with the likes of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 900. 2012 should see some 36 billion apps being downloaded across all platforms according to ABI, and of those Apple and Google will account for a dominating 83%. Windows Phone, on the other hand will be behind RIM and even Symbian. Nevertheless a 2% share this year would still be double the share Microsoft enjoyed last year according to ABI:
Microsoft is gaining momentum, but its starting point is frustratingly low.
That momentum may gain some pace with the launch of the Lumia 900, even if the reception it has met has been somewhat mixed. Microsoft still have its next major revision in store too, Windows Phone 8, but how much, if any, impact these actually have on consumers in a market increasingly dominated by iOS and Android remains to be seen.

LG is looking to directly compete with its South Korean arch-rival Samsung by releasing a new flagship smartphone that can take on Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S III. That's the news from Digital Daily at least. The new handset, codenamed D1L, will apparently feature a 4.7-inch screen with a 1280x720 display with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 running at 1.5 GHz running the show. 4G LTE support is also expected as is Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). LG themselves have actually confirmed that they are "... developing a phone with a project name D1L", but predictably haven't confirmed anything beyond that. In terms of actually seeing this thing it looks like it could put in an appearance as early as next month.
