CeBIT 2003 or 7 Euro to get home...

CeBIT 2003 - first day of the exhibition, part 1

CeBIT 2003 - first day of the exhibition, part 2

In this article I continue my live report from CeBIT 2003. It is my story about the second day (or first day for usual visitors) of the exhibition (12 March 2003).

Nine bus stops divide our apartments from the exhibition. It’s almost unreal to catch a taxi as we live in the suburbs of Hanover and traffic is not heavy there. So, we had to spend an hour to reach an exhibition, though one need only 10-15 minutes to get there by car. That it is why it was very interesting to know that our colleagues need only 7 Euro to reach an exhibition. I enjoyed this phrase. Earlier my French friend said that he needed two cigarettes to reach a house. It was my favourite expression, but now I learned one more original statement :).

Before you can read the main part of this review, I’d like to add that I only try to share my impressions about the exhibition and various products made by different companies, and not retell the information, which is contained in press-releases and CDs given to journalists. I will do it later after arriving in Moscow, when I will be able to digest received information.

I said some words about a new Panasonic X70 in the first part of my review. Next day some new phone models and working samples of X70 appeared on the stand of this company. X70 is based on the same platform as GD87, but has a bluetooth support, better matrix of built-in camera and the other type of an external screen. We should notice that the connection between this phone and bluetooth devices is supported at the range of 100 m. It’s not necessary in reality as it would be difficult to find a respective headset. If you decide to use the phone as a wireless modem, so large distances are also not demande.

Taking into account that GD87 is a successful model; we can say that X70 is an excellent one. The phone will be available in Europe in September, the price is not known yet. Presumably, it would the same as GD87 has.

The other interesting product is bluetooth-headset from Panasonic. A working prototype was not available on the exhibition. This product is only elaborated; probably, only the design was ready to this moment. A showgirl demonstrated the work of X70 with a bluetooth headset from Plantronics.

We have already written about new colors of GD87 in the first part of our report. Besides, Panasonic introduced a revised version of its smallest phone - GD55. GD56 has a color STN-screen. It looks nice, but the information is not visible even in the lighting conditions of the pavilion.

G60 is a successor of GD67, it has a new design, though a possibility to insert a picture under a rear cover is remained. The information on the screen is not clearly visible in sunny day. But they promise that the price for this phone will be rather low.

The company also showed an external camera to this model. The whole construction (phone and camera) looks nice. Camera’s capabilities are similar to such kind of products.

These are all news from Panasonic’s booth. Now let’s move to Sagem. A pretty girl with a phone in her hands will meet you near the entrance.

But gentlemen also present at this stand, and they also have phones.

The main interesting handsets are Õ3, Õ5, Õ6. A top model – X6 has large icons in the main menu and rather loud ringtones. If you look at the rear part of the phone, you’ll understand that metal comes into fashion today. A big advantages of this model is a shutter, which covers a lens, and protects it at least from the dust. X6 is similar to Sony Ericsson T610 to some extent. I think that Sagem has worse design and not so comfortable interface, but however, in my opinion it is rather a good phone.

No comments to X5, all information is already known. Below you can view several photos.

Introduced clamshell phones are not so impressive. European manufacturers often lose to Korean ones and Sagem is not an exception. MY3088 is one of the examples of available clamshell handsets. It’s rather simple.

Besides, one can see an interesting concept design of the phone of the future – lightness, compactness and… What a pity that all developments of such kind remain only on paper?!

At last, one can find certain modules for phones creation, which the company delivers to smaller manufacturers, at this stand. That is all for today. In the next article I will tell about many new products from Samsung.
