BlackBerry Messenger Not Being Shutdown In The UK    [ 09-08-2011 19:44 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A rumour has been doing the rounds today that RIM is set to shut down its BlackBerry messaging service in London due to the riots that have been taking place in the city. That isn't the case though and it seems the rumour was started by a hoax message that has been sent around various BlackBerry devices.

TechRadar received a statement from RIM saying that the company sympathised with those who have been affected by the riots, which have seen gangs of looters pillage shops and burn cars and buildings, including homes. RIM did say they had contacted the British authorities and offered to help in whatever way they can and that they will work within the relevant telecommunications law present in the UK.

The rioters have been organising themselves through social media sites such as Twitter as well as on mobile devices such as BlackBerrys and some may have very well believed that RIM would therefore shut down the service to stop it being abused. As of the time of writing this though RIM has no plans to shut down any BlackBerry services in the United Kingdom this evening.

First Ice Cream Sandwich Devices To Launch In October?    [ 09-08-2011 19:41 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Boy Genius Report is today reporting that sources close to Google are saying that the first devices to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich will start landing around early October this year. The release date has allegedly been sped up to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 5, which many believe will take place around the same time. No doubt the intention is to make sure that customers have a credible alternative to the iPhone 5 and that Apple doesn't get it all their own way.

ITC Will Investigate Second Apple Complaint Against HTC    [ 09-08-2011 19:24 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: via BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple are still pursuing their various lawsuits against HTC and the Taiwanese manufacturer has some bad news on that front today with the ITC saying that they are investigating a second complaint filed by Apple against HTC. It was only last month that a judge ruled in Apple's favour against HTC in a patent dispute and this second complaint seeks to have various HTC devices banned from import into the United States.

The ITC has set a target of 45 days for the investigation to be completed and Apple must be feeling pretty confident of the outcome after their recent victory. Having said that Apple are apparently willing to settle some of these patent disputes with HTC even if publicly they are still going ahead with legal action against HTC, as well as other Android manufacturers such as Samsung and Motorola.

Google Lets New Search App Slip Out    [ 09-08-2011 19:04 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Techcrunch     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Mr Ambassador with this Ferrero Roche you are really teasing us ... Google hasn't been teasing us with cheap chocolates, but it has been teasing with a new version of its integrated search app for Android. The new version was promptly let out of the bag before being resoundly covered up again.

Before it once more retreated into the darkness some of the new features were documented for those of us nosey/geeky enough to care about these things. First up is a new interface, some of which you can see in the picture below. The new interface categorises results into sections, with web results shown at the top of the list and results from contacts and so on presented below.

There is also a rather nice feature to remove specific items from searches by giving the search history a good old long press. There is also the option to show country specific results in those places where Google has a presence e.g. google.co.uk.

For the moment you will have to wait to start using all this, but with the cover pulled back, even briefly, it surely can't be too long before it is released for real.
